hill tribes as "typical" Filipinos, which
Is far from the truth.
The total population of the Philip
pines is 10,:i.rj(),01l, of which 0,495,272
are Christians and civilized, and have
been so for .'100 years, possessing a cul
ture and refinement thut will compare
favorably with that of other countries.
The number of non-Christians is 855,-
!iC8, and only a small percentage of
them are uncivilized. They are fast
becoming educated, and will ultimate
ly make good citizens.
Seventy per cent of the Inhabitants
of the Philippines over ton years of
age, according to the last census, are
literate. This Is a higher percentage
of literacy than that of any South
American country, higher than that of
Spain, and higher than that of any
of the New Republics of Europe whose
independence is being guaranteed by
