"WAY DOWN EAST"
Dfe W. Griffith's plcturization of
"Way Down East" at the Casino
theatre for four days starting Fri
day .evening, April 8, will go down
in film history as his greatest
achievement since ''The Birth of a
Nation," and by many it will be con
sidered eaual If not surpassing bis
former triumph in'tfie' matter "of
dramatic strength and thrills.
"Way Down East," as it was re
membered as a stage play, did not
seem to lend itself to pictures of an
especially thrilling character, but the
hand of Griffith has transformed
this bucolic pastoral play into a
screen classic of no mean propor
tions. Griffith, unquestionably a
poet and idealist, has seen through
the story "of Anna Moore and her
mock marriage a message to human
ity, and he has painted his picture
with the true sense of the artist un
afraid and unflinching. He paints,
truly, with a broad and lavish brush,
but his strokes are sure and con
vincing. He is not an etcher, he is
a realist, almost fatalist. But he
rings true: His message is sent
across to his audience with a thun
dering BWiftnesB that actually' lifts'
his onlookers out of their seats in
enthusiasm and excitement.
Mr. Griffith has taken unusual
pains in the selection of his cast
and in the choice of Lillian Glsli for
the role, so long played by the late
Phoebe Davies, he has shown excel
lent discernment. Miss Glsh carries
the production on her slender shoul
ders with a strength and understand
ing that stamps her again as our
foremost screen tragedienne. Special
mention also is due to Richard Bar
thelmess as the -David of th"e story:
The attraction carries with it a
big symphony orchestra.
Two performances 'daily will
given, at 2:15 and 8:15.
