A BAD FIRE
AT SALEM
Industrial Build ins of State Reform
Burns No Lives Lost: No One
Hurt.
Salem, Or., Dec. 18. The industrial
building of the State Reform School,
abont three miles from hero, was
destroyed by fire between 1 and 2 o'clock
this morning. No one was injured. The
loss will reach $25,000; insurance, (8000.
For a time it seemed as if all the reform
school buildings wonld be destroyed.
The tire was discovered in the engine
room. SoperintendenbBickers eaye be
has no idea how the fire started. The
engine-room is on the first floor of the
industrial building, and in the same
room is the boiler for the steam 'heating
plant and the dynamo for the electric
light plant. A nightwatchman is em
ployed at the building, and the fire was
discovered by him before it had made
great headway. Without the aid of the
fire-fighting apparatus, which was cut
off by the fire, no attempt could be made
to fight the fire in the industrial build
ing, and it was only by heroic work that
the fire was prevented from spreading to
tho main building. The Salem fire de
partment responded promptly to the
call for aid, but the fire was under con
trol before its arrival. Telephone coin
municatton with toe school was not
Interrupted, but, owing to the excite
ment, few details are obtainable. There
are about 120 bovs confined in the
institution, and about twelve employee
live at the main building. The work ot
the institution will be seriously
namperea until tbe damage can be re
paired.
Up to 3 o'clock this morning, no at
tempt had been made by the reform
school boys to take advantage of the
confusion and make their escape. When
it is stated that the industrial building
was only thirty feet from the main
building, the heroism of the officers and
pupils fighting the fire can be under
stood.
Marvelous as are many of the mighty
office buildings in the great cities of
America, the new Broad Exchange,
which is now going up in New York,
will surpass them all. In this remark

An interesting coin has just been sold
in Germany. It is one of the few coins
in the history of the world which can
be accused of having a humorous side
to it. In 1679 the Danes descended on
the port of Hamburg, but their attack
on the famous Hants town proved un
successful. The inhabitants of the town
struck a medal to commemorate the
occasion. The legend on the coin was
as follows : "The King of Denmark has
been to Hamburg. If thou wouldet
know what he achieved, look on the
other side." It is needless to add that
"the other aide" is a blank.

Naw Yobk, Dee. 17. A dispatch from
Rome to the Paris Temps, quoted bv the
correspondent of the New York Times
and London Times in the French capital,
describes an interview with the Pope, in
which His Holiness complained against
the false reports in regard to his health.
"You see," the Pope said, "that it is
not all over with me. I work six or
eight hours a day, and my work Is not
easy, for it embraces the whole church.
Please say that I am not yet dead."
