One of the worst bands of cattle
rustlers that ever existed in tbe
West, says the Baker City Demo
crat, Is now nnrt has Leon for several
years in unchecked swing in tbe 10
terlorof Central and Eastern Ore-
gon. Such is tbe startling situation
. ,
known by practically no one outside
the men who hnvc to bear the brunt
of tbe savage depredations of tbe
rustlers. Terrible as arc the con
ditions existing today in the interior
stock country, the facts in the case
have never been passed out until
now. Tbe expose has just been
made. Beginning almost at Ukiah
the field of operations of the cattle
rustlers extends southward through
tbe entire John Day country. It
passes on out of Grant county into
Harney, spreads westward into Lake
and eastward into Malheur and
Baker, and only ends when tbe Ne
vada line is reached and the
far
distant line of the Southern Pacific
in Southwestern Oregon- One main

band is supposed to cover all this
immense territory.
One of the industries that will
receive the hardest knocks this year
is the one which has sprung up of
"all wool goods," which is in reality
shoddy, says tbe Pacific Farmer.
Tbe National Livestock Association,
tbe grange and many other influen
tial bodies are after this class of
manufacturers with tbe determination
that the fraud shall not be allowed to
exist. There is no objection to
manufacture of shoddy goods, but
tbe objections come m like tbe
manufacture of oleomargarine and
butterine and other imitation food
products. If the goods could always
be sold and known for what it is,
no one would object to the manu
facture of shoddy goods but the
great trouble is tbat it is palmed on
an inspecting public and this is in
jurious to a very large extent to tbe
wool industry which would only be
benefited by bealtby growth of pure
woolen goods.
A fruitgrowers' union was organ
ized at Salem last week along tbe
lines of tbe one tbat has done so
mucb for tbe fruit growers of tbe
Hood river valley. In urging tbe
Salemites to organize, Chairman E.
L. Smith, of tbe State Board of
Horticulture, insisted tbat the time
will soon come when fruit growers
will be compelled to organize as a
matter of necessity. Colonel R. C.
Judson, tbe well-known railroad in
dustrial agent, gave an account of
tbe working of a union at Milton,
Umatilla county, and stated tbat
those who were in tbe union got
72 per cent more for their fruit tban
they bad been able to get prior to
their joining tbe union. Will Tbe
Dalles fruit growers be tbe last to
recognize tbe value and importance
of a union at this place?
The Blue Mountain Eagle com
plains that tbe fish laws of tbe state
have been so framed in tbe interest
of tbe cannery men on tbe lower
river tbat until tbey are changed not
a salmon can be caught in Grant
county, except with hook and line.
"Such selfishness on tbe part of tbe
cannerymen will accomplish noth
ing," says the Eagle, and adds that
in spite of tbe law salmon have been
caught from every fork of tbe John
Day this season by use of Winchester,
gig, trap and numerous other meth
ods. Fish Warden Van Dusen is
warned tbat, law or no law, the people
of Grant county are going to catch
salmon for their own use, and that
It tbe warden himself lived up tbat
way he would do tbe same.
The Silver Lake, Wallowa county
Herald says : "A strong . effort will
be made io defeat Joe Simon as
United States senator to succeed
himself. Tbe effort is commendable.
When a man begins to tbink himself
a political boat ii is time tbat be was

Attractive Women.
All women sensibly desire to be at
tractive. Beauty is the stamp of health
because it is tbe outward manifestation
of inner purity. A healthy woman is
always attractive, bright and happy.
When every drop of blood in the veins is
pure a beauteous Hush is on tbe cheek.
But when the blood is impure, tnorose
ness, bad temper and a sallow complex
ion tells the tale of sickness all to plain
ly. And women today know there is no
beauty without health. Wine of Cardui
crowns women with beauty and attrac
tiveness by making strong and healthy
tho98 organs which make her a woman.
Try Wine of Cardui, and in a month
your friends will hardly know you.

Women and Jewels.
Jewels, candy, flowers, man tbat is
the order of a woman's preferences.
Jewels form a magnet of mighty power
to the average woman. Even tbat
greatest of all jewels, health, is often
ruined In the strenuous efforts to make
or save the money to purchase them. If
a woman will risk her health to get a
coveted gem, then let her fortify herself
aitainst the insiduous consequences of
coughs, colds and bronchial affections by
the regular use of Dr. Boschee's German
Syrup. It will promptly arrest con
sumption in its early stages and heal the
affected lungs and bronchial tubes and
dr,ive the dtend disease from the system.
It is not a cure-all, but it is a certain
cure for coughs, colds and all bronchial
troubles. You can get Dr. G. G. Green's
reliable remedies at Elakeley's drug
store. Get Green's Special Almanac. 1
