AN ATROCIOUS MURDER.
Well-Known Portland Young Man Sli.it
by an ailn.
Victim of an atrocious murder, James
B. Morrow, a prominent East Side
young man Ilea dead at Dunniny's
morgue. The manner in which the deed
was perpetrated is enveloped in mys
tery, and the identity of the assissin is
Unknown. The circumstances surround
ing his tragic death make it one of the
eaddest case3 that has ever baffled the
efforts of the police to unravel. Leav
ing the home of the young woman to
whom he was engaged to be married,
Mies Lilah IHidge, of the East Side, j
James Morrow, with a j ;st on his tips, i
started for his own home one mile and a
hah away. He parted with her at 11 :46,
too iate to catch a car, and started
blithely upon his long walk. When the
tragrt iy was enacted he was three blocks
away from his home. The murder took i
pl .ci on East Eighth street, betweeu j
Stephens and Mill, twenty feet away
from the residence of C. S. Bradford, a
mail-carrier. A loud report of a pistol
or rifle was heard at 12 :18 a. m. The
neighborhood was aroused. Listeners
merely turned ovtr in their beds. Sev
eral heard the clatter of retreating foot
steps. The sounds of the neighborhood
dhdont. The raindrops fell upon the
body oi the bov, while the residents lay
back to a second slumber. Four hours
elapsed before the crime was ditovered.
Then every one was aroused to a realiza
tion that prompt action on the part of
eome decisive persons might have raieed j
a hue and cry, some one might have
been at hand to hear tne dying boy make
a last statement, and others might have
sent out the alarm and headed off the
escaping murderer and his possible ac
complice. Two theories hive arisen as to the
manner in which the murder was com
mitted. The first ia that it was the deed
ofejoie jealoas rival of James Morrow
for the affections of Miss Lilah Illidge.
The second is that it was the act of a
highwayman. The latter theory is sup
ported by the well-known fact that the
East Silo has been infested with desper
ate men for some time. Several hold
ups have taken place in the same neigh
borhood. According to this view of the
caee, Morrow encountered the highway
men at the place of the murder He has
been heard by his family to make the
assertion that if ever held up he would
never throw up his hands, but would
make active resistance. Whether he
made a motion to resist when he heard
the demand of the highwayman will
never ba known, In view of his deter
mination and iiis well-known reputa
tion for a high degree of personal cour
age this might have happened. At (he
first show of resistance, accoiding to this
view, the highwayman fired, and, seeing
him fall, fled to avoid pursuit and possi
ble capture.
