.--.MaMMMMlMMaSiaMaaaiasaMS The Dalles Daily Chronicle. FRIDAY NOV. 22. 1901 SOCIETY'S SHAMS. The tragedy enacted id Eugene the other day recalls to the Plaindealer the oft repented story a young and thoughtless girl fallen a prey and victim of the vultures who masquer ade in man's clothing and are in many oases recognized as the nabobs of society. From what we can learn the poor and wayward girl who resorted to suicide last week to end her troubles and remorse owes ber first wayward step and later downfall to a young man of this county, who flocks in the best of society and counts himself and is counted among the respectable, when he should be scorned and shunned as a leper. Here is where our social conditions are wrong, and parents prone to err. A prodigal son may return but how about the daughter ? The son may wollow in the mire of debauch ery, feed upon husks ot infamy, as sociate with the herds of degredation, and with the first sign of a desire to return to the path of honor which leads to the home of purity he left to delve in sin, society prepares to receive him with open arms. Mothers who are otherwise careful of their daughter's honor are gracious and kind to the moral leper whose pollut ing influences are not yet harmless. As some one has said, under the im pression that they will encourage him to lead a pure life they invite bim into the sacred walls of their home and shower upon his sid sodden head caresses and words of praise. How about the girl who went nstray ? Will the display of a desire to reform secure her recognition to social re spect? No! The faintest zephyr of suspicion will be carried upon the tongue of gossip until it becomes a tornado of accusation. The erring girl is, in the eyes of a bigoted society, forever lost. A move to the better is not noticed ; a plea for aid unheard; a beseeching cry for pity is scorned ; curses instead of benediction are heaped upon ber sorrowing head. And why should this distinction be made? Wby should the one be forgiven, the other condemned ? It is unjust! It is heathenish ! It is a scar on the face of civilization! The weaker should not receive the blows while the stronger receives the protection. Instead of driving the daughter to suicidal occupation and sheltering the son who caused her ruin, reverse the decision of "sentiment" and the world will be better. FAITHFUL TO DUNBAR. The East Oregonian is in receipt of another letter from Cbatles W. Fulton, state senator from Clatsop county, wherein he reiterates that he can under no consideration be a can didate for the governorship. He gives as a reason that Mr. Dunbar, of Clatsop, is now secretary of state and asks a renomination; that he is duty bound to support Mr. Dunbar, who has been a supporter of Fulton and therefore has earned the latter s unfailing support now ; and that furthermore Mr. Dunbar is qualified to serve again, on the ground that be has been the best secretary of state Oregon ever had. Senator Fulton's position does him credit, and stumps bim as a man who will not take to himself present advantage at the cost of bis political honor. He has strengthened himself by bis atti tude, and won the admiration of friend and foe alike. Mr. Fulton observes in bis letter that the oflioe of governor demands a peculiar quality of executive abil ity that few iren possess, and he says that no man should ask for that office unless be be convinced that be has this sort of ability. He rightly at taches to the office ot Oregon's chief executive immense responsibility and necessity for a vaet mass of details to be properly accomplished only by one who baa bad the requisite busi- ness training. He modestly dis claims such qualifications, and believes he would refuse such nomi nation were it tendeied bim. Whatevor be the outcome of the coming campaign, Mr. Fulton has intreuched himself behind the breast works o( honorable principle, and this will not be forgotten . by the people of the state. So much of treaohery is manifest in practical politics, that it is refresh ing to come across a man who will put asile political preferment to keep his ethical pledges, implied if not actually made, to another.
