    A TARGET FOR ROBBER'S LEAD.
Gsorgo Casey Knhl.nl and Almost Killed
t Hood Itiver-
With marks of n highwayman's bul
lets on his neck and clothing George
Casey told a thrilling story the other
day at the Portland police station, says
the Tell gram. Casey was robbed and
shot on a train at Hood River October
19th, hat this was the first information
the anthorities had of the affair. Casey
bad been under treatment for his inju
ries nt the Portland Medical Mission.
He exhibited two tears in the back of
hie neck where the bullet had gone
through the flesh. Ho also showed an
injury on his threat where the highway
man had held the revolve! so close :n
trying to kill Casey that the powder had
burned an ugly hole. Through Casey's
coat were holes where the third bullet,
whizzed past his stomach.
According to the narrative of Casey,
he was returning to Sacramento via
Portland from the Paloue country,
where he had heeu working in the har
vest fields. At The Dalles he changed a
$20 piece and placed $19 40 in bia purse,
which he concealed in his inside pocket.
With a one-armed man Casey found a
snug berth in a refrigerator car and
started on the ride to Portland.
At Hood River Casey iett the refriger
ator car, as it was too wrm, aud scram
bled to the top of an ordinary freight
car. As he sat on the roof he saw a
stranger about his own size climb up the
side of the car. Reaching Casey's perch
the stranger pulled a revolver Casey
thinks it was the "pepper box" variety
and ordered hands up. As if he knew
what he was after the highwayman
snoved his hand into the ve'y pocket
where Casey's purse was concealed. A
watch the victim wore was not molested
because the roohir did not search after
finding the purae.
Having taken the money tiie highway
man ordered CaBey to walk over the
roofs of three cars to the refrigerator car
and then commanded him to get down.
Casey was afraid and thought the rob
ber might fore? him. to jump from the
train when it wa3 running or even kill
him if he entered the refrigerator again.
These thoughts spurred the victim to
fight and he tried to throw the robber
from the top of the car. The highway
man was sturdy and the strength of
Casey was unequal to the task.
Another order was given to scramble
into the car and when Cssey refused his
assailant shut at him, pointing the re
volver at Casey's stomach. Casy
knocked the weapon aside just in lime
to save himself and send the lead
through the folds of his coat. The sec
ond shot passed over the victim's shoul
der, but the powder burned his throat.
The tiiird shot missed Casey completely
and the fourth bullet perforated the
back of his neck. After the shooting
the highwayman j'imped from the train
and disappeared, the train crew
soon afterward.
Since Casey's recovery he has been
searching for his assailant in the Bad
Lands uf Portland, but without success.
He Liave a good description of the high
wayman to the Kirtiand police.
SCARCITY OF BEEF
la a Few Years Only the Wealthy Can
Buy It So Say Western Stock
men.
Chicago, Nov. 7. According to infor
mation received at the headquarters of
the National Livestock" Association in
this city. Congress will have the Western
public land situation brought to its at
tention this winter in a new and
startling manner. A number of promi
nent cattlemen of the West, who have
been quietly investigating, are prepared
to show that during the past five years
there has been an enormous decrease in
the number of cattle in this country, a
decrease which seriously threatens the
beef food supply, and that, unless speedy
action be taken by congress, in the
course of a very few years beef will be
selling at such fabulous prices that onlv
the wealthy can afford to indulge in the
luxury of a beefsteak.
The cause of this rapid decline in the
number of beef cattle is said to be due
solely to the contraction of the Western
public grazing lands and the increase in
the consumptive demand. The rapid
settlement of the West has caused the
ranges left to become crowded, and this
crowded ondition has prevented the
reseeding of grasses, and consequently
millions of acres of once good pasture
have been turned into absolute desert.
Most of ths large herds have been dis
persed and slaughtered, and the bulk of
the cattle supply ia now being furnished
by the small stockmen, but the evolution
from the large herds on the open range
to the smali herds in pastures is too
slow, owing to unfavorable laud con
ditions, and where a few years ago the
markets were supplied with cattle four,
five and sis years old, even vearlincs are
of beef.
