The Dalles Daily Chronicle. THURSDAY NOV. 7. 1901 MODERN ME Til VSBLABH. If Albanian records nrc to be trusted, the oldest man in the world, Ismail Hudju, died on Wednesday nt the age of 160. As the case had attracted general attention and had ! e : been duly investigated, theic is little j doubt that Iludio was the modern ! Methuselah. The next oldest man was the Indian Gabriel, who died at Salinas, Cal in 1890, nt the age of 151. In the same year Mrs. Eva B. Hart, of Syracuse, N. Y., died at the age of 113, and in 181 JNancy britti Kennedy, of Augusta, Me., died at j the age of 118. Mrs. Ann Taylor, Ot Missouri, died on Tuesday at the age of 110. The United States census reported, in 1880, 4,600 persons 100 years of age and over. More than half of these are colored. The oldest white man known to have lived in America was Joseph Crele, who died at Cale donia, Wis., in 1866, at the age of 141. At that time there were living in the United States 542 white women and 385 white men over 100 years of age ; 769 colored men and 1,141 colored women, and 49 Indian men and 37 Indian women. In 1870 tbe white and colored centenarians had increased in numbers and the Indians numbered only twenty-one all told. By 1890 all the Indian centenarians had disappeared. Between the years 1656 and 1890 fifty persons died in Great Britain and Ireland at ages ranging from 103 to 169 years. Thomas Parr, of Shropshire, died in London in 1563 at tbe age of 158; Henry Jenkins, of Yorkshire, died in 1670 at the age of 169; James Bowles, of Killing worth, who died in 1656, was 152 years old ; Lady Eccleston, who died in Ireland in 1691, was 143, and Colonel Thomas Winslow, who died in 1760 was 146 years old. Between 1652 and 1852 six per sons in Scotland died at ages ranging from 122 to 139 years. Dr. W. Meade died in England In 1652 at the age of 158, aud John Kovin died in Hungary in 1741 at the age of 172. But in the record for centen arians the negroes of the United States stand first in nun bur, and Chicago has a larger percentage of centenarians than any other Ameri can city. Ex. A Salem correspondent of the Evening Telegram states that tbe prospects are that Geer will have a solid delegation from Marion county. Tbe different factions are getting to gether and fixing everything up, and Eastern Oregon seems to be un thought of. This is a little early in the game. It is not a good idea to count chickens before they are batched. Ileppner Gazette. Our Heppner brother is unduly alarmed. His error is in placing confidence in the manufactured thunder appearing in the Telegram. Up this way, where the truth is known, the Tele gram article is considered a Que piece of humor. Salem Sentinel. Tbe United Stales continues at the bead of the list of the world's ex porting nations. The domestic ex ports are greater, and the monthly average during 1901 has been higher than that of any other country. For the nine months ending with Septem ber, our exports of domestic products were $1,024,605,181, against $1,018, 845,768 from the United Kingdom, tbe next largest exporter of domestic products.
