Underground Fire at Stevenson.
Stevenson, Wash., Nov. 4. The resi
dents of this place were thrown into
great excitement this morning when J.
T. To Hon and W. Udill reported that
they had discovered a coal deposit on
fire within a quarter of a mile of the
town. The greater part of ilie popula
tion turned out to eee what was the
matter. A subterranean fire is burning
in a crevice in the rocks with a sulphur
ous smell. So hot is the fire that it was
difficult to make any headway at xcave
tion. It is a pnder to the people here
and it is thought to be coal or gas on fire.
In the near vicinity of the fire are .small
veins of coal runniug back from the
Columbia river. Some years ago a coal
prospector sunk a shaft some fifty, but
abandoned it. Recently coal prospectors
were operating in the neighborhood and
declared there wet excellent indication
of coal and gas. They bonded much of
the property in the immediate neighbor
hood. Kleetlon at linker City.
Bakkb City, Or., Nov. 4. The munici
pal election of city officers today was
quiet. Party lines wero ignored. Mu
nicipal ownership was the only issue.
The present council has gone on record
reveral times within the past year on the
matter of municipal ownership, aud as
all the old member were up for re
election, an effort was made in some of
the wards to defeat them. In every
ward where there was a contest the old
members were successful. The following
were elected:
Recorder and poliee judge, W. H.
Bently ; city treasurer, 8. George Foster ;
councilman, first ward, H. 8. Bowen ;
second ward, Dr. J. P. Hayes; third
ward, H. . Courtney; fourth ward,
Byron Gale and Louis Crabill.
Conaldlne on Trial.
Skatnli, Nov. 4 - The trial of John
Considine, charged with the murder of
Chief of Polloe Will Meredith, begao in
the tuparior court this morning before
Judge Emory. The attorneys for the
defendant renewed their motion for a
continuation, which was again denied,
The work of impaneling a jury was at
once commenced.
Tite cise of Tom Considine, jointly ac
cused with hie brother, John, has not
been set for trial.

M'MiNMvifcLc, Or., Nov. 4 A live
deer appeared on the college campus
this morning. When the students be
tnn to assemble for olasa work tie
animal, which was about a 8-year-old
doe, was compleeently browsing on the
lawn between the main building and
the athletic field.
About twenty-five boys undertook to
surround the deer, thinking they could
capture it with a lasso, but the agile
creature easily cleared the eight-foot
board fence which encircles the athletic
field, and made for the mountains, about
ten miles distant. Although the moun
tains near McMinnville are well stocked
with deer, it if decidedly unusual for
one to appear in the heart of civilization.
It was presumably run out of the hills
by honnds.
Big Colorado Mining- Deal.
Colobadu Spkixos, Colo., Nov. 4.
Thecontroioft.be Klktou Consolidated
Gold Mining Company on the property
of which a remarkably rich t trike was
made recently, has passed into the bands
of Eastern capitalists for a consideration
based on a valuation of $6,876,000 for
the ent;ce.cip'.talization. The namea of
the buyers are withheld for the resent
by E. M. Delavergne, their local agent,
himself a prominent stockholder.
The deal is perhaps the the largest
involving Colorado mining property
since Strattoo's Independence was sold
in April, 1899, for $10,000,000. In local
mining circles it is thought that the
purchasers ate New York capitalists,
who represent Webinar, Belt A Co., of
London, who have sought to buy the
mine.
To Take Moving Picture.
Ban FuANcisco, Nov. 4. Interest in
the coming battle between the giants of
the prize-ring is so great that the Edison
Kinetoscope Company, of New York, is
going to take moving pictures of the
contest, to be produced in all the big
Eastern cities. At a meeting between
the representatives of the pugilists, the
the Twentieth Ceutnry Athletic Club,
Land a member of tbe Eileen Company,
all tbe arrangements were perfected.
Lights aggregating 160,000 candle-power
will be plaeed over the ring, and
maobinee with 20,000 feet of film will be
etationed around the arena to oatcb
every movement, blow, feint and guard
of the men.

TROOPS FOR
SOUTH AFRICA
Soldiers in India Will Be Sent to the
Transvaal.
New York, Nov. 4. Commenting up
on the South African military sitcation,
the London correspondent of the Tribune
says: It is understood to be tbe in
tention of tbe war office to send 5000
more mounted men out to South Africa
during the next six weeks. There are
only about 7000 mounted men at home,
bo that the military authorities are faced
with the problem of training soldiers
minus tbe necessary accompaniment of
cavalry arms. To meet this obvious
failinir, it is probable that several com
posite regiments of yeomanry will be
voluntarily embodied for home servicer
A move will soon be made to bring
home fiom South Africa tbe men who
have served over two years in the war,
and their places may be taken by tbe
British cavalry division of seven regi
ments now in Indi . After tbe con
clusion of hostilities it is expected that
a permanent garrison at the cape will
consist of 50,000 men.
German Barbarity.
New Yobk, Nov. 1. A dispatch from
Berlin to the London Times and Ntw
York Times quotes an article in tbe
Vossiache Zitung referriug to I lie rr. se
cution of two Stuttgart journalists for
libeling the Germau tioops in China,
The Voesische Zaitung says :
"There is no question of barbarity in
connection with the conduct of tbe cam
paign. There is no ground for the sup
position that tbe troops of other nations
were more humane in their conduct than
those of Germany. At the eama time it
remains open to question whether it was
necessary, as Genera) Leese), thinks, to
resort in so many cases to tbe punish
ment of binding onr men to stakes."
Will Kencue Ml.. Stone.
New Yobk, Nov. 4. According to the
Vienna Politiscbe Correepondenz, quoted
by the correspondent of the London
Times and the New Yotk Times in tbe
Austrian capital, a well-known Mace
donian brigand has been instructed to
obtain information as to whether Miss
Ellen M. Stone is still alive. Two other
brigands, well acquainted with tbe
country, bave been commissioned by
United States Consul-General Dickinson
to try to get in touch with tbe mission-
ary's captors. The perfect of the Sofia
police have also sent two messengers.
Mies Stone's release is again represented
as being imminent.
