THE YALE SPIRTT.
There are many reasons wby Yale
University should celebrate with
pride the two hundredth anniversary
of its foundation, but one of them
stands pre-eminent. What should
give its admirers the greatest satis
faction as they survey its two
centuries of uotablc achievement in
"training young men for employ
ment both in church and civil state"
is the fact that it has always made
the national cause its own ; that it
has never faltered in its allegiance to
the flag; that it has invariably illus
trated a true and manly ideal of
American citizenship. Tbe quality
of its patriotism has been un
questioned, and it has never hesi
tated in times of national stress to
place its finest energies, intellectual
and material, at the country's service.
This was as true in the Colonial
days as now. The colony of Con
necticut was founded in almost
absolute independence of control by
church or king ; its form of govern
ment was among tbe earliest of writ
ten constitutions, and it steadily
fought throughout the whole Colonial
era every attempt of England to
impose upon it an arbitrary rule.
Of this spirit Yale was one of the
chief conservers, and in the days
preceding tbe break with England It
was frequently stigmatized by loyal
ists as a veritable nest of sedition.
Tbe fine patriotism of the struggling
college during tbe Revolution is
typified for all time in the martyrdom
of Nathan Hale, a graduate of the
class of 1773; and that this sentiment
was not confined to the undergradu
ate body was illustrated in the well
known enterprise of Naphtali Dag
gett, president from 1766 to 1777,
who, when New Haven was invaded,
shouldered a musket and marched at
the head of the students against the
British forces. The part that Yale
men played in the Civil war, the
manner in which scores of under
graduates threw aside their books at
Lincoln's first call for volunteers, is
a story too well known to need re
telling. But perhaps the proudest
fact of all is that in these latter days,
when the spirit of whining has been
abroad, when hundreds of intellectual
exquisites cosily ensconced in many
a professional sanctum have shown
their utter inappreciation of a critical
point in American history, tbe uni
versity at New Haven has spoken
out loud and bold. One of the
tenderest recollections of Yale men
today must be that three years ago,
when the noble statesmanship of
William McKinley was not so gener
ally recognized as now, the Yale
corporation made evident its admira
tion of bis character and career by
giving him tbe degree of Doctor of
Laws. And in view of all these
facts it is especially fitting that a
formal feature of this celebration
should be the bestowal of the same
honor in person upon Theodore
Roosevelt, another exemplar of patri
otism and vigorous citizenship after
tbe best Yale manner.
Ij this the Yale spirit? If it is,
three days of eloquence, of illumina
tion, of emblematic ceremonial and
historic pageant are scarcely long
enough. There is nothing squeamish
or thin skinned in tbe quality of Yale
Americanism; it is strong, young,
elf -assertive, unquestioning. There
fore let the university rejoice; and'
let tbe nation rejoice also!
The departure of the French fleet
from Teulon, bound direct to the
Dardanelles, and tbe consequent ex
cliement in Turkey where the public
defenses are being hurriedly thrown
into effective shape, may prove tbe
torch that shall set Europe ablaze,
and bring to tbe forefront tbe death
less Issue of Russian or English
supremacy in tbe Indies. Tbe Boer
situation leaves Great Britain with
at least one band tied, and grim
fighter as she is, this Is a handicap
that even she cannot hope to over
come. The "bear that walks like a
man" may have deemed tbe moment
propitious for the final settlement of
tbe question that be has inherited
along with the rest ot the Romanoff
glories, and is now using bis French
ally to "pull the chestnuts from the
fire" that will be started in the far
East.

Brain Food Nonsense.
Another ridiculous food fad has been
oranded by the moat competent author
ities. They have dispelled the silly no
tion that one kind of food is needed for
brain, another for muscles, and still an
other for bonee. A correct diet will not
only nourish a -particular part of the
body, but it will sustain every other
part. Yet, however good your food may
be, its nutriment is destroyed by indi
gestion or dyspeysia. You must pre
pare for their appearance or prevent
their coming by taking regular doses of
