American dresses will stand about one
washing that way. Our school house is
an immense one room bamboo building,
with hard wood tables and bamboo
benches for furniture. We are to have
a new building scon and until that is
finished Mies Mitchell and I teach only
the girls and only two hours a day, from
2 to 4 in the afternoon. Oar cottage is
jnat across the street from the plasa,
where the baud plays two hours every
day, and the school house is hard by.
They are now erecting a seaffol.l in the
center of the plazi, where there is to be
a nntilir hnnsinv n the lot.
Our nest door neighbors (Mestizo
h it Spanish and half Filipino) keep a
little canteen, and there was a wedding
there last night and today. They com
menced about 8 o'clock last night and it
is now aimcet 1U a. m. and the joy is
still uncontined. Their music is a piano
and an orchestra. They make pretty
music, too, but there is such a thine ae
having too much of a good thing. This
is a holiday on account of the president's
iuneral. The services in the plazi were
most beautiful and impressive. All of
the troope were assembled, end to the
mst beautiful funereal mu-ic the flag
was lowered and draped in black. Isn't
the deal!: of the president something
terrible? Is it possible that such a grand
man had to be taken in that way? How
can it be explained? We get mail from
ManiU every day or so and have direct
communication by wire. This place I
think in time will De the place of all
Luzon. When we get our ice plant and
electric lights, I cannot think of any
place more delightful, unless it be Hon
olulu. Yon wouid be amazed to see
how well I stand the heat. It really
isn't half as bad as I expected. I wae
glad to get away from Manila, though,
for that climate isn't half so nice ae this."

Under date of September 20th Miss
Roth Cooper, one of the teachers sent by
t ie government to the Philippine Isl
ands a few months ago, writes to her
family in this city an interesting acconnt
of bat ext erienct- in her new home, and
through the courtesy of Miss Cooper's

copy part of the letter. Miss Cooper
and a Mise Mitchell have been assigned
to a school in Ban Fernandino de la
Union, a picturesque little town on the
aea shore in Northern Luzon. They ar
rived there by steamer from Manila on
the 12th of September, and after land,
fug they were met by the native presi-
deute, who took.them to the native gov
ernor's offic-, where they were introduced
with all the form and display peculiar
