A Democrat's Threat.
Georgetown, Ky., Oct. 23. Tbe trial
of Caleb Powers was resumed today. It
has been discovered by counsel for the
commonwealth that one of the jurors
was a schoolmate of the defendant, and
was in the same class with him for three
years at Kentucky University.
George L. Daulorth, of Louisville, was
the first witness on the stand today. He
was in the senate chamber when Goebel
was shot, but was unable to tell whence
the bullet came.
N. 1. McDaniel testified that after
Goebsl was shot he heard Dr. R tbinson,
of Frankfort, say : "Let's get guns and
kill Taylor and every white republican
io the square."
State Senator J. B. Hnflf said that
when Goebel was shot he was coming
from the Agricultural building. He
contradicted Colonel Jack Chinn, who
his said that he remained at Goebel'e
tide. Senator Huff said tnat when he
aw Colonel Obinn be was on the steps
of the State-house a good distance from
Goebel.

SOUTHERN PACIFIC
OVERLAND HELD UP
Robbers Blew Open Express Car With
Dynamite, but Were Held at Bay
by Messenger Charles, With a
Shotgun.
EuGKrJK, Or., Oct. 23. Tbe Portland
bound California overland train on tbe
Southern Pacific was held np by two
men near Walker's, a small station
fifteen miles sonth of here, at an early
hour this morning. Tne robbers got
away with tbe registered mail pouch,
but nothing more, They blew open the
express car with dynamite, but Express
Messenger C. R. Charles refused to let
them enter, end kept np a steady fire
with a shotgun. It was due to Messenger
Charles' nervy work that tbe hold-up
did not net the perpetrators more booty.
Tbe passenger coaches were uncoupled
at the robbers' order and left behind,
the front end of tbe train being rnn
ahead several miles before the despera
does attacked the cars. Consequently
tbe passengers slept through it all, and
did not know that a hold-up had oc
curred. After the robbers obtained the regis
tered mail pouch they compelled tbe
engineer to uncouple tbe locomotive and
carry them a few miles. They stopped
at the outskirts of Eugene and ordering
the engineer to go back after bis train,
disappeared.
Bailer and Bla Heltogratns.
New York, Oct. 23. According to tbe
London correspondent of the Tribune,
tbe king has taken great interest in the
controversy about tbe Ladyemitb belio-
grams, which has been carried on with
out intermission since Sir Red vers
Buller made his unfortunate speech a
fortnight ago. Mr. Brodrick was sum
moned to Balmoral to give His Majesty
tbe war office view of the affair, and the
retui n of the court to London was marked
by the official announcement that Sir
Red vers Bailer bad been relieved of tbe
command of tbe First Army Corps.
No Clew of Chicago Itobberi.
Chicago, Oct. 23. Detectives admit
that they have no possible clew from
which tbey can trace the identity of the
men who committed tbe robbery at the
Chicago poetoffice. Nothing of the
slightest value bas been found up to tbe
present time, although thirty detectives
and inspectors are working diligently on
the case. All the known life-breakers
of prominence now at liberty are under
surveillance, and secret service men and
police in all tbe large cities are aiding
tbe local force in its work.
An Explanation.
T. A. Van Norden has seen fit to an
nounce that the firm of J. E. Adcox &
Company is extinct. Tbe firm name is
extinct it is true, but, as everybody
knowe, tbe business continues as before,
and I have been its sole owner since
December 10, 1900, since which time
Mr. Adcox worked for me for wages till
about a month ago, when I discharged
bim for drunkenness and for taking and
pawning a gold watch left in my care for
repairs. Those sending watches from a
distance intended for J. 3. Adcox & Co.
will please address them to myself,
where tbey will receive tbe attention of
as skilled a watchmaker as there is in
this city. All work done at my store is
guaranteed, se this has always been my
method of doing business,
