The Dalles Daily Chronicle. WEDNE8DAY OCT. 23. 1901 SENATOR MITCHELL'S VIEWS. It is no surprise to us, says the j CorvalUs Gazette, but no less grati- j fying to find Senator T. H. Mitchell not only in line with tbe best thought j and pnrposes of tbe party but fear- j lessly and clearly defining his posi- j tion. In an iterview published in tbe Oregonian he says ot tariff revision : "I firmly believe nothing congress j could do would tend so stronyly to tbe destruction of the good business conditions now prevailing as to enter upon a general revision of the tariff." This is unqueslonably true. Business conditions throughout tbe whole country were never better. There is very little of a merely speculative spirit entering into affairs. There is no boom sweeping over the country, but the conditions are those wbicb attend the remunerative employment of capital in tbe legitimate develop ment of our unequalled resources through commerce, manufactures and agriculture. Labor, skilled and unskilled, never has been so fully employed nor so well remunerated as now. Prosperity is general, and since it is undoubted ly tbe result of republican policies and largely that of a protective tariff it would be most unwise for congress to disturb any of the conditions which have contributed to it. Busi ness enterprises demand stable con ditions. Trusts, demagogues and free traders declare, are products of pro tection. If it can be ascertained that tbe tariff creates, fosters or sustains trusts tbe senator would put their product on the free list, but, he adds, "I apprehend that tbe tariff is not so responsible for the existence of the great trusts now in operation as many people suppose." The sen ator knows what every intelligent man who has studied the subject knows that the great manufacturing trusts are necessary to the cheapest production and highest wage rate. He favors reciprocity when it is truly of reciprocal benefit, but he calls attention to the fact that nearly one-half of tbe commodities we now import is already embraced by the free list. Something must be done to restore and strengthen our merchant marine. Senator Frye's scheme may be the best means, and if so, he says: "I should not be frightened at the word 'subsidy,' bnt would support it." fie will favor tbe most drastic legislation within constitutional (imi tations for the suppression of anarchy and anarchists. Oregon is fortunate in having an able, Industrious and influential dele gation in congress. They know what they want and usually obtain as great a quantity of it for tbe state as many more populous states re ceive. The city of Eugene is making an effort to raise a bonus of $15,000 for a woolen mill and will probably suc ceed, and the Portland papers an nounce that another woolen mill is about to be erected in Portland. Come to think of it, isn't it strange that some of these woolen mill men don't fix their attention on The Dalles? There is no town in Oregon of the size of The Dalles that has anything like its advantages and facilities. It is the greatest wool market in Oregon, and the greatest primary wool market on the Ameri can continent. We have large scour ing mills that have won a national reputation for tbe excellency of their work, and the wools for which The Dalles is the central market have also won a national reputation in compe tition with tbe whole United States. Ad open river to tbe tea, In compe tition with transcontinental lines of railroads, gives us transportation facilities of tbe beat, and an electric power plant of tbe first order is ready to furnish all the power needed at much lower rates than it can be ob tained by steam through the use of coal or wood. And, In addition to all these, tin business nMn Of thtft city are ready and willing to do tMl right thing towards a woolen mill Or any other legitimate enterprise of tbe kind, or of any kind. It is a pleasant thing to find rock ribbed democracy approving any thing that republicans do. This is from the Albany Democrat: "Rec iprocity is a good deal nearer free trade than was the revenue reform advocated by Cleveland and the democratic party in 1888 and 1892. It's a wonder, therefore, that the extreme protectionist don't denounce the reciprocityites as traitors as thev denounced the democrats when they advocated the same thing under another name."
