The Dalles Daily Chronicle. TUESDAY . OCT. 22, 190t OLD STORY WITH VARIATIONS. The New York Commercial ays Portland will have a new democratic daily paper within sixty days. Its promoters are Wills 8. Thompson and Arthur Cooper, who bargaiued with the Democratic State Central Committee to instaH the best plant in the Northwest if 10,000 paid-up subscriptions at $7.50 yearly were secured. The Commercial says that more than the necessary 10,000 sub scribers have been secured and the plant has already been ordered. Ten type-setting machines and a modern Hoe press are included. Mr. Thompson is a well-known newspaper man who has been con nected with the San Francisco Ex aminer for some years. "The paper will be called the Journal and will receive the Hearst news service. Indeed, it is common y supposed that Mr. Hearst owns a one-third interest in the concern. Crack writers from the New York Journal, Chicago American and San Francisco Examiner will, it is under stood, be brought to Portland, and the line-up of talent will give the Journal a start such as is seldom enjoyed by a paper." All of which looks well in print, but it will take a good deal more than 10,000 paid up subscribers and a corps of "crack writers" from the three most notorious yellow journals in America to successfully buck against the Oregonian. The Oregonian suspects that there is an clement of truth in the sug gestion that a protective tariff is responsible for the existence of trusts in a less degree than many suppose. Some other people have had a simi lar suspicion for a long time. Some of the most collossal trusts in the country never received a cent of direct benefit from our tariff laws and free-trade England has her full quota of combinations that owe nothing to special tariff legislation. Though but 42 years old, Presi dent Roosevelt, considered as a pub lic man, is well out of the nursery. He is eighteen years older than the younger Pitt was when be was prime minister of England, eight years older than Gladstone was when be entered the cabinet, eight years older than Napoleon when he was made first consul for life and older .than Frederick the Great when be invad ed Silesia, or Grant when be took Vicksburg. The department of agriculture announces that the three most im portant estimates of the world's wheat crop of 1001 so far made agree that the crop is larger than that of either of the two preceding years. The department withholds its opinion as to tbc degree in which the world's crop has been approxi mated in any of these estimates until a considerably larger number of official returns is available. According to a Texas farm paper the large cattle ranches of Southwest Texas have so suffered from drouth this summer that the cattle remain ing are very thin; and the additional fact that feed is dearer than ever before, all indicate that the number of cattle fed in Texas will be quite short this year. Large shipments were made early in the season from that section to the Indian Territory to save tbem. It is said that the physicians wLo attended the late President MoKinley re to send in a bill of $100,000. If It is as large as this of course con gress will have to pay It. It is not much wonder that farm ers have made money out of potatoes Ibis year. The Orange Judd Farmer recently published an estimate of this year's crop which made it ap proximately 167,000,000 bushels as against 240,000,000 in 1900, and nearly 290,000,000 In 1899. Circuit Judge Eakin, of Eastern Oregon, has held that the recent sale of tax certificates was unlawful and unconstitntsonal on three grounds. First, the law is retroactive; second, the notice was deficient; third, the enacting clause of the law does not pretend to explain the bo ly of tbc act. How's Till!
