MONDAY
OCT. 21, 1901
Klickitat county Is a poor 6eld for
a democratic paper. Barton C. V.
Brown, who was chief mourner at
the funeral of the late Goldendale
Journal, says in his ooituary notice :
"There is only one way for a demo
cratic paper to ever be made to pay
in this county, and that is to import
a few democrats. At present there
only seems to be eight or ten,
the balance pretending to be of
some other political faith, judging
from the enthusiasm (?) displajed in
the support of the Journal, f loping
that this will be the last democratic
paper that ever makes its appearance
in this community, and expressing
my sincere thanks to those who have
made my stay in Goldendale a con
tinued round of pleasure (?), I bid
farewell to the dying hope foi Klick
itat democracy and a pleasant good
bye to all."
The Pendleton Oregonian prints a
truth thuswise: "Senator Simon,
elected through a course of systematic
treachery to the late Mr. Dolph and
to H. W. Coibett, desires to succeed
himself. But how he is going to do
this in the light of the recent victory
of Mitchell is beyond the ken of the
ordinary citizen And strains the faitb
of the most devoted follower of the
little boss.' If Simon cannot com
mand offices for his friends, how can
he keep tuem? It begins to look as
though the political grave of Mr.
Simon were being hollowed out."
Seuator Mitchell is demonstrating
to bis constituency that he has in
fluence at Washington. Pie is the
same vigorous Mitchell as of yore
and is a valuable man in the senate
for the state of Oregon. Eugene
Register. Joe Simon has gone to
Washington to try and do something
and also to endeavor to prevent
Mitchell from doing anything.
Salem Sentinel.
The Moro correspondent of the
Wasco News inserts his Irish probos
cis into other people's affairs as
follows: "The Observer man and
the Chronicle man seem to be at
outs. We don't blame Mr. Observer.
When we were young we didn't want
any old duck interfering in our love
affairs ; especially on any 'shady side
of forty' proposition."
Arrangements ate being made in
Portland for the systematic canvass
of the city for a stock subscription
-of $300,000 for the Lewis and Clark
fair. There ought to be no difficulty
and there surely will oe none in ob
taining this amount, and when it is
obtained Portland can with good
grace ask a liberal subscription from
the state.
There is already considerable activ
ity being manifested over the ap
pointment of a U. S. marshal for
Oregon. W. H. Dufur and John
W. Minto are the candidates. The
appointment is said to be due about
December 1st. Salem Sentinel.
Oregon, remarks the Salem Senti
nel, has never re-elected a republican
governor. In point of fact Oregon
republicans have never renominated
a governor. Four years is enough,
sometimes, and this is one of the
times.
About the worst case of contempt
of court is that of a paper which re
fers to the supreme court justices as
"eminent guys in Mother Hubbard
gowns."
The Umatilla House barber shop has
recently been enlarged and fitted up with
the only steam-heated bath rooms in
the city. All the furniture and appoint
ments are new and of the beat. For the
convenience of business men the place
will be kept open, until farther notice,
till 10 o'clock p. m. oll-lm
Steamer Bailey Gatzm. Commen
ing October let the boat will leave
