The Shan iko Leader says: "It Is
a pleasure to note the many good
things the press of Oregon has'to
ay for Hon. J. N. Williamson, of
Princville. Wherever Mr. William
son is known he is held in the highest
esteem by the people. In whatever
official capacity he has been placed
he has filled it faithfully and to the
entire satisfaction of his constituents.
His name has been spoken of as the
proper person tor the republican state
convention to nominate for a state
office, and without doubt his party
will see thai he is placed at the
front and elected to some position
where he can serve the people faith
fully and well as he has always done
when called upon in the past."
The acqueducts and reservoirs of
Jerusalum show that there was
abundant provision for running water
in the ancient city. Within the last
few weeks they have been brought
again into the service of the city,
which for many centuries has been
dependent upon small accumulations
of rainwater. The water is piped
from Solomon's Pools, nine miles
south of the city, drawing water from
the sealed fountain mentioned in the
song of Solomon. It is a deep sub
terranean spring, which Sows through
an arched channel to a distributing
chamber. This increase in the city's
water supply will enable twelve
ancient fountains in the city to be
used.
Tbe Boston Herald speaks ap
provingly of the Portland Oregonim
as "a republican newspaper that has
always had sound ideas upon the
tariff," and then g"es on to quote
the Oregonian as saying that "enough
has been done for the manufacturers,
and wholesome 'reform would con
sider the interests of the consumers,
especially those of tbe farming class."
It will now be in order for the
Herald to refer to Tom Paine as "a
distinguished exponent of orthodox
Cbiistianity." American Economist.
Edward Everett Young, of the
Baker City Republican, has been
censured more or less for having
taken the pains to ascertain the views
of the members of the Oregon legis
lature as to the wisdom of calling an
extra session to make an appropria
tion for the Lewis and Clark cen
tennial; but tbe East Oregonian very
pertinently remarks that Mr. Young
is almost tbe only man in the state
who has manifested sutlicient energy
in the matter to make a mistake.
The Antelope Republican has sus
pended publication. In other words
it has given up tbe ghost for lack of
sustenance. There never was a
shadow of excuse for its existence
and the wonder is it didn't die a
bornin'.
The Goldendale Journal has
turned up its little toes. It owed
the Klickitat world an apology for
having come into it, and it has made
the amende honorable by dying
young. Klickitat is a poor country
for a half-boiled anarchist.
