THUR8DAY
OCT. 17. 1901
MR. WILLIAMSON, OF CROOK.
The Portland Telegram is sadly
unin'ortued upon the public record
of Hon. J. N. Williamson, of Crook
county. In the course of a write-up,
the Telegram says :
"His career Las been quite meteor
ic, for it is only within the past three
years he attracted attention through
out the state. Thus far he has
served in the legislatnre as repre
sentative one term, and is now filling
his first term as a senator. Having
voided becoming a rabid partisan,
he stauds well in both factions of
tin republican party."
Mr. Williamson is not by any
means as new as the Telegram would
make him. He was elected to the
legislature in 1888 and again in
1898, and in 1900 he was chosen to
the senate from a district which his
own band bad made the previous
year. In the meantime Mr. William
son has been sheriff ot his county,
editor of a newspaper and an attor
ney, in all of which places he dis
tinguished himself. Mr. Williamson
is not nearly so anxious for a nomi
nation in 1902 as a good many
imagine, but his name will be up for
secretary of state, so that when the
time comes to change that officer in
1906 be will not be forgotten. He
is a young man yet. Salem States
man. The Statesman mistakes as to Mr.
Williamson bring an attorney. He
must plead guilty to having been an
editor, and a good one, too, but be is
not an attorney and never practiced
law. His business life has been
identified with the stock interests of
Crook county, and he is a successful
and prosperous sheep man. The
statement, however, that Mr. Will
iamson is "not near so anxious for a
nomination in 1902 as a good many
imagine" is wholly gratuitous. Mr.
Williamson is not posing for the re
mote future nor is he a "miscellane
ous candidate" for anything that
may turn up. He consistently asks
for the secretaryship of state and
failing that asks for nothing more.
Says the Astoria News: "The
East Oregonian announces that Wal
lace McCammant, of Portland, is an
avowed candidate for the nomination
for congress in the second district to
succeed Malcolm Moody. It says
the nominations are five months
away, but 'the politicians are just
now doing the real work that will
make up the slates and nominations.'
It thinks McCammants candidacy
will be a factor in favor of the
Eastern Oregon candidate for gov
ernor against Geer. It, however,
characterizes bis candidacy as 'an
other demand on the part of Port
land for offices of prominence.' It
further says: 'The crux of the
question is, how will Simon and
Mitchell align themselves as to tbe
congressman?' The News can tell
the East Oregonian that McCammant
is one of Corbett's bowers. Ergo
Simon's."
The Eugene Guard, strenuously
democratic, remarks that with tbe
single exception of Grover Cleve
land, President Roosevelt is tho only
president since Andrew Jackson de
clared that to tbe victors belong tbe
spoils, who is an active and positive
advocate of civil service reform.
Arthur, Harrison and McKinley were
all friennly to tbe movement. But
none of these men were so identified
with tbe system as Mr. Roosevelt has
been. President Roosevelt served
from 1889 to 1895 on tbe civil ser
vice commission.
Tbe Eugene Guard, every-day-in-tbe-week
democratic, says: "Senator
J. N. Williamson, of Prineville, a
republican, authorizes a Portland
paper to say that be is a candidate
for secretary of state. He is an ex
cellent man personally, and was
formerly a resident of Lane county."

Another ridiculous food fad has been
branded by the most competent author
ttles. They have dispelled the silly no
tion that one kind of food It nestled for
brain, anothSr for muscles, and still an
other for bones. A correct diet will not
only nourish a particnlar part of the
body, bnt it will sustain every other
part. Yet, however good your food may
