    The Dalles Daily Chronicle.
FRIDAY
OCT. 11. 1901
The East Oregonian. at Pendleton,
serves notice upon the Chronicle, nt
The Dalles, that the latter bns very
little right to be considered In East
ern Oregon at all and has little to
nay of authority about what Eastern
Oregon wants or doesn't want. The
East Oregonian and a few others
.i . , , . ... .n '
over in that country would like to
be at out with not only Western
, , . '-
Oregon, but Western Eastern Oregon ;
e ,
yet the E. O. pats Senator W illiam-
son lovingly on the back, not with-
standing the fact that his home is
just fifteen miles east of a line lead-
, . . ... ..
nig straight south from The Dalles,
6
and that be spends his winters and
studies his political manual among
the high political nabobs of that city
Of sand. Tbe East Oregonian is
entertaining in the consistency ( ?) of j
its cheeky reasoning for republican
use. Salem Statesman.
"The Havemeyer trust is for free
sugar and the Oxnard trust is for
protected sugar," says the Oregonian.
It follows then that tbe Porto Rican
tariff of 15 percent of the Dingley
rates was not imposed at tbe dicta-
tion of tbe Havemeyer trust as used
to be affirmed by every anti-adminis-
tration paper in tbe land, tbe Ore
gouian included. Oxnard's desire
for protection is both natural and tDe hair needs when it gets in that con
Witimfttp. His interests are whollr 1 dition. We have the Crown of
connected with beet sugar, a borne
product, which is now a source of
wages and income to 1,000,000
Americans, and one which in a few
years promises to supply all tbe
sugar needed at a lower price than
ever before known.
From Washington comes tbe in-)
formation apparently "semi-official,"
that the pronunciation of tbe presi j
dent's family name is not as though
it were Ru-se-velt, but Rose-ze-velt.
It is added that tbe family is
sensitive on this matter, so Western- ;
ere who contemplate calling at the
White House with favors to
Pre88 .
ill do well to remember this tip'
and govern themselves accordingly.
Somebody has recently written a
book to prove that Columbus prac
ticed a fraud in discovering America.
It may yet oe demonstrated that
Columbus never discovered America
at all. Tbere is a good deal of off
band evidence to indicate that an
Irishman discovered it centuries be
fo e Columbus was born.

Moxtgomkky, Ala., Oct. 10. W. A.
Humphreys, of Waco, Tex. ; Marcus and
G. M. T. Humphreys, of Annieton, Ala.,
and their relatives have begun suit for
tbe possession of oil fields at Beaumont,
Tex., upon which are situated fourteen
oil wells. In the suit that has been !
brought against the capitalists now con-;
trolling the property it is claimed that i
when the oil fever struck Texas, Captain
G. M. Lucas, J. M. McFadden and!
twenty-three others took possession of
5670 acres of oil land south of Beaumont. '
Tbe value of the Lnd is said to be $25.
000,01X1. This property, according to the
papers, rightfully belonged to the
Humphreys estate, and suit is entered
against the capitalists for ('.'5,000 per
year from each defendant for fee page
upon tbe land, besides 85 cents per
barrel on 5,000,000 barrels of oil shipped
out of tbe state.
Woiuen and Jewels.
Jewele, candy, flowers, man tbat is
tbe order of a woman's preferences.
Jewels form a magnet of mighty power
to the average woman. Even tbat
greatest of all jewels, health, is often
rained in the strenuous efforts to make
or save tbe money to purchase them. If
a woman will risk her health to get a
coveted gem, then let her fortify herself
against tbe intiduous consequences of
coughs, colds and bronchial affections by
tbe regular use of Dr. Boschee'a German
fcyrup. It will promptlyarrest con
