Tt talks Daily Chronicle. THURSDAY OCT. 8. 1901 MEN OF THE PEOPLE. The republican party hat Buffered snore from the assassination of its leaders called to the highest station than any other ever formed, says the Globe-Democrat. In looking back over the line of martyrs the historian will be struck by the fact that all three, Lincoln, Garfield and McKin ley, were sons of poverty who -rote to eminence through the recognition of great qualities by their fellow citizens. Lincoln was so poor that ha bad to educato himself ; Garfield paid for bis education by manual labor on the towpath and elsewhere; McKinlev came from a long line of toilers, was too poor to obtain a col lage course and was compelled at an early age to earn bis bread. All these men, great by nature's birth right though born in poverty, fell by the pistols of assassins. In a speech last week on these martyrs of Ameri can history, General Grosvenor said: "The great men of today in politics, at the bar, on the bench, in the great railroad organizations of the country, in the mighty industrial field of our tremendous success, and in all the vast world of effort, mental and physical, in the United States, the men of grandeur, wealth and leader ship, have come up from the humble walks of American boyhood." Every observer of American affairs knows that, nine limes in ten, the leading men in the country were originally poor boys. What, then, is anarchism trying to accomplish by the assassination of those called to the post of highest responsibility in the United States? Would they kill the spark of ambition in children born to poverty and bid them fol low the example of Czolgosz, whose sole object was to destroy and mur der? The common people, the toil ers themselves, are the chief victims of anarchists, who object to Amer ican opportunity and the rise of any nan to a higher station. There is something so demoniac in anarchism that it appeals to the mind by its possibilities of human depravity. The poor are the last who should listen to or tolerate it, for it substi tutes malignant bate for the 'spirit of emulation and cheerful obedience to nature's law of labor. dash betwsea BpseulaUoe, K. C, B. C. Oram and Eddie M., and would have been a pretty race If It were not for the fact that the race was thrown off by B. 0. Green's Jockey, who bold the horse back for reasons better known to him self. It was won by K. C, with B. C. Oreen second. The jockey wee immedi ately tam mooed to the lodges stand, and in spite of bis protests of Innocence the bets were declared off and it is likely that be will be taught a lesson by the judges that he will not soon forget. The second heat of the trotting race between Edmund 8., Freak and Dennis, which was not pulled off in time for yes terday's issue, was a complete eurprise to everyone. Edmund 8. apparently won the first beat without much exer tion. Freak took the lead in the first round and easily held that position to the finish, while Judd Fish's Dennis want to the front at a surprising rate and took an easy second from Edmond 8. Time 2:46. The third beat was almost as surpris ing as the second, aud in this Dennis showed that he a as a speedier horse than was anticipated and won the heat in 2:44, which was the fastest time or any of the beats. Edmnnd S. followed about a length behind, with Freak third. This heat was followed by the most amusing feature of the afternoon, it be ing the novelty race under saddle. It consisted of a half-mile walk, half -mile trot and half-mile run, the horses taking part being Won. Buffington's Mayflower, T. J. Dripps' two borsee, Volto and Daisy, A. Wise' Whistler, and F. S. Flemings' Slocum. Daisy won by about an eight of a mile, with Slocum second and Mayflower third. The trotters were once more brought on and in this, the final heat, gave a plan J id exhibition. Dennis took the lead and held it thiouguout the e tire jracs with apparent ease, while Edmond 8. and Freak bad a close contest for aaeo id money, which was won by the iormer. This gave Dennis first money smd Edmond 8. second, the time of the concluding beat being 2 M. The neat feature of the afternoon was one of the finest ever seen in the dis trict, it being an esbibition of Hippl droine, or Roman stand-up riding. It was dona by R. D. Wallace, champion Hippidroaae rider of the world. He stood on the basks of two horses and aaade a circuit of the track ait toll speed. 1 ear teielr a wooder. and bis we well rsaelead Xbcoaacladiaf race was the naif-mile Mrs. Wilson, of the Campbell & Wil son Millinery Parlors, has engaged the services of Miss Margaret Torgler, a first-class trimmer, a former employee of Hellers, of Portland, and is there fore prepared to meet the demands of the best trade, as well as the medium.
