THE OREGOH1 A S SLANDERED.
The Oregonian has been most on
justly branded as a "yellow" journal.
That paper has its faults but the
yellows" is in no sense one of them.
The slanderer is Hon. Thad Huston,
of Tacoma, who, addressing a great ;
crowd at the auditorium in that city j
on Thntsday, when memorial services
for the dead president were held,
gave
voice to the following ex
pression :
'The nameless wretch who
I
com- '
mitted the act that co t this nation
the life of the foremost man of his
time is a mere incident, a virulent
pustule in that loathsome skin dis
ease called anarchy, which rlllicts
our body politic, and that disease
demands and will receive vigorous
constitutional treatment. But the
offense has come and shall we not
look beyond the miserable pervert
behind the prison bars and lay a
large part of this offense at the doors ,
of men in America, who in the public I

tool of bad and corrupt influences? ,
Io order that I may not be misunder
stood, I want to say that
I refer to
such papers as the New York World, :

American, the San Francisco Ex
aminer, the Portland Oregonian, and
to such speakers and public men as
John F. Altgeld, Wellington and
others of that ilk. It is within the
province of the federal government
to correct these abuses, this prosti
tution of the liberty of the press and
American free speech, and this
power must be exercised."
Medical statistics show that a large
proportion of gunshot wounds of the
stomach are fatal. In- the Inter
national Encyclopedia of Surgery is
cited as noting only one case of re
covery in 3,000 gunshot wounds of
the stomach. A writer in the Journal
of the American Medical Association,
dated January 4, 1900, states that of
110 sections for gunshot wounds of
the abdomen, 62 per cent died.
Another writer states in the Phila
delphia Medical Journal of July 22,
1899, that of 253 cases of gunshot
wounis of the abdomen operated
upon 52 per cent died. According
to the report of the surgeon general
of the United States army, made
June 30, 1900, of 3,475 cases or
penetrating abdominal wounds dur
ing the civil war, 3,031 or 87.2 per
cent died. The same report is au
thority for the statement that during
1896 and 1899, 81 or 70 per cent of
116 cases of abdominal wounds died, j
and of ten cases operated upon, nine j
were fatal.
Among Ibe friends of President
Roosevelt there is a feeling that be
has started well. He has reassured
,L. . ii. I : .

the world I bat there are to be no
disturbances of the friendly relations '
!
i . , ., ,
our government
and other nations.
fie has promised 1
to continue tbe policies of President ;
McKinley and io proof of bis sincer.
lty has induced tbe McKinley cabi- j
net to remain by bis side. Tbis is ;
not all that be has done, though it '
is a eood deal. Bevond that he has
shown that be not only has a wise
bead upon bis shoulders, but that be
knows bow to find and follow good
advice from otbeis. Again be has
sbown no small resentments. He is
winning tbe good opinion and tbe
warm friendship of important men
who were devotedly attached to!
President McKinley and whose in-
fluenoe wiU be of great value to him j
in organizing a successful adminis
tration. The name of the assassin of Pres
ident McKinley is said to be derived
from Polish verb which, used as a
noun, means a crawling thing suoh
as a snake in the grass. The name
certainly seems to fit.
, The government now has about
880.000 of the funds embezzled by
former Captain Oberlin M. Carter,
and the chances are that more may
be recovered before the captain has
ceased to insist that he is not guilty.
