THURSDAY
. . AVt,. 22. 1901
TO DOWN TAMMANY.
It is 11 mighty attempt that will be
made in New York this year to break
down the power of Tammany. A
good many republicans, among them
Senator IMatt. are willing to vote for
an independent democrat for mayor
and a good many democrats are will
ing to vote for an independent re
publican, says the Hrview. What is
desired by the better element above
all is to get rid of the rascally muni
cipal government that has been in
control for the last three years.
When Tammany took charge of
Greater New York something over
three years ago, under the new
charter, it immediately increased the
cost of government by $28,000,000.
The next year it managed, by an
increase of over $400,000,000 in the
assessed valuations, to lower the tax
rate a triite; but the actual cost of
the municipal government was still
further increased. It has grown
every year since, chiefly by increase
of salaries of Tammany tax-eaters,
until this year it amounts to over
$08,000,000, and with some hundreds
of millions of Increase in assessed
valuation there is a tax rate of over
L'.iU per $100, the highest yet under
the new charter.
Had this increase in municipal
expenditure been accompanied by an
honest administration of affairs there
might have been less fault finding
among the taxpayers, but all sorts
of corruption have flourished, rang
ing from the Ramnpo water steal
and the ice trust exposure to the
recent discovery of rottenness in the
police department. The people are
thoroughly disgusted and Tammany
is likely to encounter an opposition
more formidable than any other that
has been arrayed against U for years.
Of course it will require a tremen
dous effort to drive out the cor
ruptionisis who are so well en
trenched, but it looks now as if that
effort was to be made and with a
tatr prospect of success.
Running a newspaper is just like
running a hotel, only different. When
a man goes into a hotel and finds
something on the tab'e which does
not suit him he does not get up an.l
raise hades with the landlord and tell
him to stop his d d old hotel.
Well, hardly. He sets that dish to
one side and wades into some of the
many dishes that do suit him. It is
different with some newspaper
readers. They find an article oc
casionally that does not suit them
exactly and, without stopping to
think it may please hundreds of
other readers, make a grand stand
play of their supreme assininity and
hasten over to "stop their paper."
Wealthy Americans have taken to
the tail of buying DOtable estates in
Knyland. It is saul that one magnate
from this pari of the world is en
deavoring to buy the Osborne home
of kueen Victoria, where she died.
Many historic places have been taken
up, to the chagrin of some of our
Anglo-. a.on brothers. John I'.
Rockefeller published the statement
a few days ago that he contemplated
erecting a 11,000,000 summer home
in the Adirondacks. This is one
point in favor of the great schemer.
While he is squeezing out of thr
people millions, hi does not seem to
be alliicted with the craze to spend
bis money in foreign lands.
A curious accident t,i an auto-
mobile occurred in New York a short
time ago. The owner of the vehicle
got out of the carriage first and
turned to help his companion down,
but as the latter stepped liom the
carriage her dress caught in the lever
of the machine, turning it on at full
speed. She jumped and reached the
sidewalk safely, but the carriage
went its way up the avenue with
great speed. This trip, of course, ,
was not a long one, as in two blocks I
i it ran into a horse-drawn cab, which
it demolished. The autombile was
not injured.
