CVRSK OF THE TREATING II. HUT
It will be a Valuable service to
the country if the Roman Catholic
temperance societies succeed in in
augurating the movement for eradi
cation of the treating habit. It is this
that makes strong drink a curse to the
human race. National men recogni.e
that this is true. When those who
compose our great temperance organi
zations realize the force of this truth,
and reconstruct their reformatory
methods that they may align to it.
then will n genuine correction of the
abuse of drink be accomplished.
The force of the assertion that the
treating habit is the real curse, in the
very nature of things, will appeal
more strongly to men WOO have
mingled in the resorts of men, than
to women who have been mostly
within the precincts of the home, or
under the protection of their male
friends or relatives when in contact
with the world. To the men it will
need no argument.
And they will concede that when
the treating habit be eradicated the
use of liquors will no longer be an
abuse.
There is no reason why alcoholic
liquors should not be handled with
as much safety as quinine. There is
not much doubt that the drug would
cause more suffering than the liquor
if used to the same extent of abuse.
Yet, there is no crying need of re
form from the use of quinine, unless
the claims of the homopathists be
valid, and that is a matter for the
medical schools to use as a bone of
contention.
Were treating eliminated from the
liquor traffic, little need would exist
for reform.
This, however, is something diffi
cult to accomplish. Perhaps it is
practically impossible. The treating
habit finds its strength in the spirit
of "bon hommie," good fellowship,
sociability, qualities in themselves
tar from harmful, and on the other
hand adornments of character, and
contribulary to brightness in life
and cheerfulness of manner. Kast
Oregonian.
A St. Louis physician is in a fair
way to make fame and fortune if he
can prove to the world that he can
do as he says with cases of insanity.
He says that unless the patient is
insane as a result of an Injury to the
head or was born an idiot he can
effect a cure. He offers to take any
subject the newspapers of St. Louis
will name, and if he does not cure
the patient inside of a few weeks he
will forfeit $500.
The Democratic candidate for
governor in Ohio says he will not
spend a cept in his campaign. With
.McLean's bat'l on one side of the j
state and Tom Johnson's on the
other it would be wasteful to knock
OQt a bung in the middle.
