Astoria, Aug. 21. Notwiti standing
the niany obstacles encountered I y the
packers, the value of the salmon canned
on the Columbia River during the season
just closed and of that handled by the
cold storage concerns in far above the
average of that of ail the years since the
enterprise has been xtensively carried
on here. This year'9 pack was 254,500
cases, while the cold storage handled
2700 tone. The market value of all the
filh handled this season is $2,570,800,
The estimate of the pack here given, j
which is generally conceded by packers 1
to hecorrest, is based on 49 one pound I
cant; to the case. Flats bring $1.05, tails
$1 50 and halves 95 cents a dozen. Using
these figures ae a basis of calculation,
the value of the canned salmon for the
present season is $1,028,800

Work of Deputy Fish Wardens.
Astokia, Aug. 21. Several letters
were received at the Master Fish
Warden's office today from the deputies
in different parts of the state, and all
speak of an encouraging outlook for
securing large numbers of eggs at the
various stations, Thomos Brown, who
is in charge of the work at Boulder Creek,
states that lie has secured 900,000 eggs
and expects to get at least 500,000 more.
H. A. Webster, in charge of the upper
station on the T inpqua, writes that after
two months' work he has everything in
readinessto take care of the salmon
when they arrive, but at the time he
wrote the spawning season had not com
menced. W. C. Brown, writing from
Salmon River under date of August 15th,
savs lie expects to secure all the eggs
there that the hatchery can handle.

Yes, August Flower still has the largest
sale of any medicine in the civilized
world. Your mothers and grandmothers
never thought of using anything else for
indigestion and biliousness. Doctors
were scarce and they seldom beard of
appendicitis, nervous prostration or
heurt failure, etc. They used August
Flower to clean out the system and stop
fermentation of undigested food, regu
late the action of the liver, stimulate the
nervous aud organic action of the sys
tem, and that is all they took, when feel
ing dull and bad with headachss and
other aches. You only need a few doses
of Green's August Flower, in liquid
form, to make you satisfied there is
nothing serious the matter with yon.

Ninety-Two tiualirls of OaU to the Acre
M'Coy, Aug. 20. E. E. Bobbins has
just finished threshing a field of fifteen
acres of Clydesdale .Spring oats that
yielded 1380 bushels, or an average of
92 bushels per acre. They are a plump,
white oat, grow tall, and have a good,
atifl straw, which keeps them from fall
ing. The grain weighs 44 pounds per
bushel from the machine. Mr. Robbins
imported the grain from England two
years ago at a cost of $2.50 per bushel,
and it weighed 50 pounds per bushel at
that time, hut was extra well cleaned.
Eruptions, cuts, burns, scalds and
ores of all kinds quickly healed by

THE SULTAN
BREAKS FAITH
France Suddenly Severs All Diplomatic
Relations With Turkey Direct
Personal Promises to Pay Disputed
Claims Have Been Utterly Disre
garded. CoNsrANTixori.E, Aug. 21. The
French Ambassador, M. Cmstans, has
notified the sultan's first secretary, that
all diplomatic relations between France
and Turkey are broken off and that the
ambassador has informed his govern
ment to this effect.
M. Constan communicated direct with
the sultan because the latest negotia
tions were transacted with the sultan
personally. The ambassador justifies
bis action on the ground tbat the sultan
broke his dnect, personal promise, given
to M. Conrtans at an audience in the
Yildiz Palace Thursday regarding tbe
purchase of the quays and the settle-1
merit of the disputed French claims.
The foreign minister also gave formal I
assurances that the agreement would
be carried out, so, in view of this breach j
of faith, M. Constans holds that it is
i 'ii possible for France to continue diplo
matic relatione with Turkey.

Washington, Aug. 21. According to
a bulletin made public by the census of
fice today Portland is the second health
iest city in the United States, its death
rate in 1900 being but 9.5 per cent, while
tbat of St. Joseph, Mo., the leading city,
was 9.1 per cent. The number of deaths
in Portland last year was but 850. The
Washington cities do not show up so
well. The death rate of Seattle was 11.1
per cent; Taooma, 11.3 per cent, and
Spokane, 13,9 per cent. But 3390 deaths
were reported in Oregon in 1900 and
4910 in Washington.
The bulletin gives the mortality statis
tics duringstbe census year in the states
and territories and the principal regis
tration cities. The total number of
deaths reported for the year was 1 ,039,004,
us against 841,419 for 1890. Perhaps the
most important feature of the results
presented is found in the decrease in the
general death rate in the registration
area of 1.8 per 1000 population, a de
drease of nearly 10 per cent. The
average age at death in 1890 was 311
years ; In 1900 it was 35.2 years.
