WEDNESDAY

STILL ANOTHER WRECK.
Anotlior appalling marine disaster
has been recorded on the Skagwny
mo, a Canadian company tliis time
being the sufferer. Inasmuch as forty
or more lives have been lost, it is one
of the most serious catastrophes that
has occurred since travel to and from
the north assumed large proportions,
In the last four
dozen
years
vessels, !arge and small, have met
with some mishap between United
States or Canadian ports and Skag- j
way, says the Spokesman Review,
The Mexico and Nevada were lost,
and several other large steamships
have encountered misfortune because
of fogs, hidden rocks, collisions or
less important marine accidents. Hap
pily, the loss of life has been re
markably small, and for this reason.
llll.il! I til..

never looked upon the trip as oue to
be associated fvttb unusual dangers.
The course to Skagway is by no
means pcriecny cuarieo, aim iiui- ,

Narrow channels have to be traversed.
and strong tides arc encountered in
awkard places. But in spite of all
this the travel to and from Alaska
has been large, and under all the
circumstances there has been notable
immunity from serious wrecks.
It would seem that the accident to
the Islander was unavoidable, if it
be true that it resulted from collision
with an iceberg in a fog. That is
tbc danger of the Atlantic the most
dreaded, but modern water tight
compartments have made it a terror
less to be feared, it' ilie slander
bad been a compartment ship it is
probable a different story would have ;
been told.
The question of Canadian annexa
tion is settling itself, so far as regards
a lanje number of Canadians. A
iie.ivv immigration from Cnn.ida into
- '
lue United Mates is taking place,
notwithstanding the reports that the
movement in tbe past few years is t
'
from the United States into Canada.
The influx of Canadians into this
country is one of the reasons for the
slow rate of increase in population
on the other side of the United States'
northerly boundary. The drift in
our direction will continue so Ions

Even independence would
not turn the tide in any perceptible
degree. Iothing except political
union with the United States will ever
give the territory north of the St.
Lawrence, the laues and the I'.Uh
parallel the place in the world which
its natural riches entitle it to and
which its ambitious sons desire.
