Bai-em, Or., Aug. 19. Governor T. T.
Geer today remitted the sentence of J.
H. Hardin, who was convicted June 10,
in the Circuit Court of Klamath County,
of the crime of selling liquor without a
license. He was sentenced to pay a fine
of 800. The Judge who inflicied the
penalty, the Prosecuting Attorney and
the County Court of Klamath County,
all recommended remission of sentence
upon the ground that the defendant,
after two mistrials, agreed to enter a
plea of guilty if immunity from punish
ment were given. Since conviction lie
has taken out a license.

Steamer Islander, on the Yictoria
SkaRway Route Struck an Iceberg
Off Douglas Island and Foundered
in Twenty Minutes.
Victoria, B. C, Aug. IP. United
States Counsel Smith, of Victoria, who
was n passenger on the steamer Oaeen
from Juneau to Victoria, gleaned the
following story of the wreck of the
steamer Islander, which struck an ice
berg off Douglass Island last Thursday,
from the survivors, 40 of whom were
passengers on the Queen :
'The Islander left Skagway for Victo
ria on Wednesday evening, the 19tb, at
6 o'clock, with 125 passengers and a crew
of 61 men on board and 10 or 12 stowa
ways. Ail went well, the steamer mak
ing her usual record of 15 knots an hour,
until at 3 o'clock on Thursday morning,
after Juneau was passed and the south
end of Douglas Island was reached.
Then sudden'y the steamer encountered
an obstruction said to have been an
iceberg, and stopped with a jerk which
aroused many of the sleeping passen
gers. "Pilot Laihonde was in charge of the
steamer at the time, and went immedi
ately to the diningroom. where Captain
Foote was having breakfast, and notified
him of the trouble. As soon as the ves
sel struck water rushed in forward in
great volumes, and the pilot advised
that the vessel he run on the beach, not
over half a mile distant at once. To
this the oaptain objected, saying the
beach was too abrupt. He thought
there was no immediate danger, but
would run a few miles further down,
where he knew there was a good landing.
"The captain aesured several passen
gers there was no immediate danger,
and that they could go back to bed, and
sent the first officer down to examine.
That officer reported that there was
great danger, and urged that the vessel
be beached at once.
"Meanwhile the passengers, aroused
to their peril, appeared on deck, and a
rush waB made to the purser by those
who had given him treasure for sate
keeping. Purser Bishop handed out all
except two bags of $10,000 each, which
were not claimed, and went down with
the vessel. The bow of the steamer
steadilv sank and. 'JO minutee from toe
time it struck the front deck was under
water, and the stern with propeller and
rudder were high and dry in the air and
useless.
"The captain remained on the bridge
until the last, and finally jumped on a
life raft, where he stayed a few minutes,
when the steamer dove forward entirely
out of sight. As it did so an explosion
occurred and the captain lo6t his hold
on the life raft and sank.
"Considerable difficulty was experi
enced in ascertaining the location of the
shore, though it was only a short dis
tance away, owing to the dense fog pre
vailing. Finally Preston, of Seattle and
Dawson, who, with his bride, was on
bis wedding trip, both or whom were
saved in the last boat which left the
wreck, heard water trickling down the
rocks, and all tfie boats readied shore.
A number jumped off the steamer into
the water, and were rescued therefrom
only to die of exhaustion from the in
tense cold. Several were resuscitated
only after four or five hours of contin
uous bard work by their comrades.

"I stuck to my engine, although every
joint ached and every nerve was racked
with pain," writes C. W. Bellamy, a lo
comotive fireman, of Burlington, Iowa.,
"I was weak and pale, without any ap
petite and all run down. As I was about
to give up, I got a bottle of Electric Bit
ters aud, after taking it, I felt as well as
I ever did in my life." Weak, sickly,
run down people always gain new life,
