The run of fish last night continued equally as good for the gillnetters as during the day previous, but the trap men are meeting with a gradual falling off. The fish have at last decided to go up the river, as the reports from the up-river seiners are that they are all making bigger hauls. Among the fish caught by the Baker's Bay traps are a number of silversides and a few sockeyes. Steel beads are beginning to get quite scarce, but the demand for them is not so great as last yeai or the year previous, on accocnt of the abundance of chinooks. In the opin ion of the police the mystery of the theft of $283,000 from the Shelby Smelting Works at Vallej i Junction has all but vanished. They are convinced that John Winters, or "Buck" Tavlor, as he is sometimes known, who is now in custody, is the man who planned and executed one of the most remarkable crimes of the century. Some of the detectives al so express the opinion that Winters bad no accomplices in the job. While the evidence against the prisoner is thus far purely circumstantial, the officials con sider it overwhelming and conclusive. The stolen bullion ie yet to be recovered and this, it is thought, will be found buried near Winters' cabin, not far from the smelting works, or sunken in tbe shallow waters of the bay near by. Winters, who had been an employe of the smelting company, was missed soon after the robbery, and on the door of his cabin was found a notice reading: "Any one who enters here will be shot." A dark cloth was drawn over the window so that the interior could not be eeen. The detectives watched the cabin all Tuesday night, but Winters did not re turn. Wednesday morning they broke into tbe bouse. Here they found many articles tending to connect him with the crime. No drill was found In the cabin, but there was a bolt cutter. In the stove was found the ashes, left by some clothes that bad been burned, and a buckle such as is worn at the back of a pair of trousers. Winters, when ques tioned, admitted be had burned his old trousers, because be did not want them lying around. Fifty men will go to work today grappling along the bottom of the bav in tt.e hope of locating the fold. The stolen gold is in leather sacks, and should the searchers' irons happen across them it is believed that they may be raised. Meanwhile, another parly will continue to dig about Winter's cabin and in the hills. Don't be satisfied with temporary re lief from indigestion.
