AKtT BURGLARS CARRY OFF A FORTUNE Three Hundred and Forty Thousand Dollars in Gold Bricks Stolen at Vallejo Smelting Works. Vallejo, Cal., Aug. 0. The Selby Smelting Works were robbed of $340,000 last night in gold bricks. The robbers had evidently been working on the case for two or three months. They had dug a tunnel from outside the house, digging a shaft first about three feet deep. They then tunneled in under the vault and striking upward, bored a hole in the strong room floor. The hole was in the shape of a manhole of a boiler. Part of the hole had been bored two months ago, it ia thought, aud the la9t one was bored last night. Through that hole they took the gold bricks and carried them to the shore near the tunnel east of the works, where they were evidently placed in a boat. In the hurry they left two of the bricke on the bank. The entrance to the tunnel was covered with a frame, over which the employes of the smelter passed repeated ly every day, but no one seemed to notice anything out of the way. The police of San Francisco and all the bay cities are at work on the case, but ao far there is not the slightest clew to the robbers. The work was that of skilled men, and evidently elaborate plans had been carried out without a hitch. The thieves got all the bullion in the vault, leaving behind only two bricke, which tt ey dropped on the shore in their haste. Only one day's accumu lation of refined gold was kept at the works. Yesterday's run was unusually heavy, and the gold was to have been shipped back to San Francisco todav. The tunnel that the robbers excavated wae about three feet in diameter, and gave them plenty of room in which to work. It is supposed that the dirt from the tunnel was taken out at night and dropped in the bay. It is thought that the men who com mitted the robbery took their plunder away in a launch, and made direct for San Francisco. There are plenty of other places, however, where they could have gone either up the Sacramentr river or to the shore of any of the numer ous bays. Following ia the Hat of the property stolen : Four fine gold bricks all num bered and containing the following : No. 1236, 1190 ounces and a fraction; No. 1237, 330 ounces; No. 1238, 1123 ounces and a fraction ; No. 1239, 1037 ounces and a fraction, aleo 10,000 ounces of gold in various shapes aud a little silver. The gold in the bricks is worth $20 an ounce. Found Badly Injured. Walla Walla, Aug. 5. Mike Shauf- nessy, a cab-driver, well kt.owu in this city, lies at the hospital today, perhaps fatally injured. He took a team and spring wagon for the trip. A few hours later the team came back to the stable without the driver. Search was insti tuted, and Shaugnesey was found by the roadside three miles from town. Evi dently a bad accident had occurred. The man waa unconeciouaand three nr. were broken, one penetrating the lungs No explanation can be given, and the unfortunate man has not regained con scioueneea to tell of the trouble.
