created a seiiaution here.
The AHHociuted Press hut) jtiHt obtained
the following Htatement from the foreign
oftlce, winch ia authorized by Count von
Iiulow, ttie imperial chancellor:
"Neither Great Britain, France nor
UtiHHia approuched Germany to partici
pate in any action aiming at ending the
South African war. Germany lias all
along distinguished between offering her
good offices ttud iuterveution. To render
tier good offices would tie possible if both
purlieu to ttie war requested it, but it
will be remembered that Great Britain
only joined The Hague conferm cb on
condition that ttie Boer states were x
cluded. There is no doubt that Mr.
Kroner, who is a serious statesman, came
to Europe to obtain the good oflices of
eeverul of the powers to end the war; but
there la also no doubt that Great Britain

never, either verbally or in writing, con

an idea.
"It in quite poBfliblethat the Bier Hide

ttie war somehow, and Unit the court Iiuh
held a teealon regarding the matter; but
that of course, ia entirely ilill'ereut fiom

has been crested by a charge uiado by
some prominent society ladies of Salem,
who visited the Marion county poor farm
recently, that the inmates of that iustl

they are in rags and not clean; that no
reading matter is provided, and that
fresti meat is served for them only once

TRIED TO POISON
HER HUSBAND
Pretty Stella Worczk Was Forced Into a
Distasteful Marriageand Attempted
to Kilt Her Lord. '
Tacoma, June 10. Deputy sheriffs are
scouring the eaetern part of Pieice
county huntiug for Stella Burgis, an 18-year-old
gill, who made two attempts to
poison her husband, John Burgis two
days after they were married. The second
attempt caruo near proving fatal tb
Buigis, be swallowing a glassful of wine
she gave him w hicli contained a quantity
of carbolic acid.
Within the past few days the deputy
sheriff have unearthed facts which
prove that Worczk, the girl's father, who
is a prominent man of Wilkeson, a little
town 'JO miles from Tacoma, Eold his
daughter to Burgie for $300. She had a
strong antipathy for Burgis, but despite
her feelings, was compelled to marry
him. She made but little outspoken
objection when she found her fate was
infallibly sealed, but in iier heart deter
mined ehn would not be the wife of the
man, a tender regard she had for another
person strongly intensifying her anti
pathy for Burgis. Ttie eclat of the mar
riage, with the feastiug and celebra'tion
cost Buigis $000. Sucli a marriage had
never beforo been fccen in WilkeEon.
This, however, failed to reconcile the
girl-wife to tier husband, and ten dayB
ago, juet two days nfter they were mar
ried, she offered Burgie a glass of wine,
playfully requesting him to drink it at a
single draught. He took a mouthful,
but it was so strong that he instantly
ppat it out and refused to drink more,
but still did not suspect his wife of
treachery. The same afternoon she
brought him another glass. This he
drank, and alinoet immediately the
poison began its deadly work. A phy
eician was instantly summoned, and
after hard work, saved the man's life.
The girl's father relented when he saw
to what lengths the marriage had urged
his daughter, and subsequently used
every effort to assist the girt well out of
the reach of the officers who are search
ing for uer.
Since the real facts have been learned
in Wilkeson, sympathy has drifted to
ward the young woman, and prominent
citizens there express themselves sorry
that the attempt was not more success
ful and did not include the entire family,
with her fattier, who6e avarieiouB greed
placed her in the extremities in which
she found herself.

Tacoma, June 10. Yesterday after
noon the police were called to arrest a
supposed burglar on A street. When
they arrived they found the man had
entered a house by a rear window. The
officers followed, and when the stranger
saw them approacli he seized a board
and pounded it to splinters over their
heads. Reinforcements were sent for.
Chief Fackler being left a'one, the man
sprang at him with a hammer, but the
latter dodged, and Sergeant McCoy, who
had just entered, wrenched the hammer
from hie hand.
A desperate Gght to put handcuffs on
the man followed. He was endowed
with uuusual strength, and snarled and
growled at the officers attempting to
overpower him. One of the man's arms
had fallen free, and a handcuff was
snapped on the wrist. The other arm
was doubled under Ins breast on the
floor, uud iu spite of ttie efforts of half a
dozen men tie coitd not be made to give
up. Filially, Sergeant McUov managed
to wrench the arm out and the other cuff
was fastened o tils wrtst.
When taken to the station it was dis
covered that the stranger was a wild
man who had been on exhibition here
uud who had been locked out of his
llOUBO.
