WOOL MARKET
IS YET DULL
Anuri'Kate of Itiisiucss Is Loss Than in
Preceding Week.
Boston, May 2!. Tim American Wool
and Cotton Reporter will say tomorrow :
Thorn in iib yot no increase to I.e. noted
in the amount of liuHinesH in the wool
market. In fact, the market has ruled
quieter the past week than during the
previous week, and we figure the sales
at only 2,121)0,000 pounds, against 11, 527,
000 )uiiiuIh a week ago. Some of the
large inillfl are reported in the market,
but with only one exception they have
taken very small quantities of wool.
The trend of the goods market ih part
ly toward an improvement, hut the cloth
ing trade is still buying goods in a con
servative way, whiuh is relleeted in a
very quiet demand for wool. Prices etui
tinuo in favor of the buyer, except on
line wools, which are firmly held in view
of the strength shown iu the country,
und the relative firmness of flue stock at
the Loudon sales. The excitement iu
the West hus abated. Two ot the largest
dealers in the market have bought no
wools iu the West, believing that the
prices which have bean paid there are
not warranted. Not only 23,000,000
pounds ol now wools thus far this year
have been bought out there, and con
servative dealers are of the opinion that
new wools can be bought at more favor
able prices later on at any rate, they
are willing to tao their chances of
securing wools lateral as favorable terms
us are now quoted.
Sides for the week at Boston Amounted
to 2,135,000 pounds domestic and 155,000
pounds foreign, making a total of 2,200,
000 pounds, against n total of 1,150,000
pounds for the corresponding period last
your. Tho sales since January 1st
uinount to 01,127,000 pounds, ogainst 01
100,000 pounds for the corresponding
time last year.

about hall way acrosB tbey discovered
that the stream was too high to cross
Bafely, and turned Bbout and endeavored
to regain the shore. The younger
brother of the dead man wua in advance,
and he says that upon looking back be
noticed that his brother's horse was un
manageable, and that the rider either
fell or waB thrown from the horse into
the water. The unfortunate man was a
good swimmer and struck out boldly for
the shore, which he reached within a
short time. Tho current, however, had
j carried him below a safe landing place,
the banks of the river at the point
reached by him being entirely too pre
cipitous for ascent. He then endeavored
to effect a landing below, but was drawn
into a whirlpool and sank from sight.
J The bo.ly has not been recovered, al
i though a search has been going on since
the accident. Hon. J. E. David, of
Croy, brought the news of the accident
to Arlington this evening.
With his parents Sanders had resided
on the John Day river fur a number of
yearc, and wan well known in Sherman
and Gilliam counties.

A cheap remedy for coughs and colds
is all right, but you want something
that will relieve and cure the more se
vere and dangerous results of throat and
lung troubles. What shall you do? Go
to a warmer and more regular climate?
Yes, if possible; if not possible for you,
then in either case take the only rem
edy that has been introduced in all civil
ized countries with success in severe
throat and lung troubles, "Boschee's
German Syrup." It not only heals and
stimulates the tissues to destroy the
germ disease, but allays inflammation,
causes easy expectoration, gives a good
night's rest, and cures the patient. Try

London', May iiO. A sensation has
been caused ut Birmingham by the dis
covery of the bodies of 31 infants in a
cellar beneath an undertaker's establish
ment. The bodies were in various
stages of decomposition and huddled to
gether in soap boxes. The establish
ment was conducted by a widow, who
today was charged with causing the
infants' deaths. The prisoner was re
manded. Parties wishing good board can find it

Only Question is Extent of Discovery
Near Olympia Oil is So Thick
That it Can Be Dipped Up With a
Spoon.
Oi.ymi-ia, May 00. The Oregonian cor
respondent today visited the scene of
Tuesday's oil strike in Thurstoja cuunty,
about twelve miles from here, and made
an investigation of the meritB of the
finds. None of the statements of those
who made the strike, and heretofore
published, appears to be greatly exag
gerated. The amount of oil in the well
is somewhat problematical, but there is
no question that oil has been ttruck.
Today two workmen were engaged in an
endeavor to empty the water and clay
from the well, and each time the bailer,
which boldB about 10 gallons, came to
the surface it contained oil. As the
bailer was emptied on a Bide bill the
oil could be seen on the surface of the
water, and could be removed with a
spoon. The oil iB, of course, crude.
Experts Bay when it is refined it will be
worth at leaet $2 a barrel as a lubri
cating oil. The crude petroleum in the
well is seepage from the oil formation at
a depth of 10S feet.
Boring was reEumed this afternoon,
and the experts employed by the oil
company aie confident that witbin a
week a flowing well, or even a gusher,
will be developed. There does not ap
pear to be any reason to believe that any
sharp practice has pfevuiled, as it would
be next to impossible to "salt" a well so
that it would show up as doeB this new
find.
Would Bnrt In Failure.
London, May 30. Commenting edit
orially this morning on the agitation in
Germany and Austria for a combination
against American commercial competi
tion, the Times says :
"The sole hope for Pan-Europe, ac
cording to these writers, is to imitate
Napoleon and introduce the continental
system agaiiiBt the United States. It
must be owned that the precedent is
rather disheartening. If the continental
system failed in Napoleon's iron grasp,
it would hardly succeed in the hands of
our old friend, the concert of Euroue.
"With the markets of Great Britain
and her colonies remaining open, the
suggested wealth boycott against Amer
ica does not wear a hopeful aspect. The
scheme is preposterous and impractica
ble on the face of it, but the editorial
articles which propose it deserve atten
tion as the revelation of the acute, con
tinued jealousy and fear of American
greatness and piosperity which prevail
in certain quarters of the continent."
Large Huef Suit).
Bakkk City, May 30. A large sale of
beef will be consummated in Malheur
county June 10th. That is the date
fixed for the delivery to one single
Eastern firm of between 10,000 and 12,
000 head of yearlings and 2-year-olds.
All of this stock is intended for the
Eastern market, and will not be driven
to the Montana or Wyoming range for
fattening. It is in condition at the
present time. Yearlings are purchased
by these buyers for $20, and 2-year-olda
for $27. This price is one dollar cheaper
than the same stock sold for at the same
period last year. The sale will clean up
most of the surplus beef iu that section
of the country, und will leave but few
from the immediate district for the Fall
market. Buyers are quite active in
Malheur and Harney counties, and offer
tempting prices.
