WEDNESDAY -
MAY 122. 1001
J. A. EBERLE,
Leadingnatjzz
Merchant Tailor,
Second Street, opposite Mays & Crowe,
We have an excellent line of Spring
Suitings, Piuitings, etc., which we are
prepared to make up in the latest styled,
and guarantee a perfect fit.
A GENUINE PROSPERITY.
Stocks have fallen from preposter
ous prices, they may fall still lower,
but there is business back of them.
While the ticker has been telling its
story for the elation or depression of
speculators, the Santa Fe has placed
orders for 125 locomotives and
sought to place orders for -10 more.
The demand is the largest on record
for one corporation and it finds the
works overburdened. An 'official of
the road said: "Never have the
manufacturers of locomotives been
so crowded."
The incident is one of many de
tails which help to explain what was
explained in a mote general way
when Black Friday missed connec
tions, says the Record -Herald. Pros
perity is not a boast for n fact. It is
of so substantial a character that the
wildest antics on the exchanges
effect only those who haunt the ex
changes. The railroad, regardless of
them, determines on an expenditure
of $2,000,000 for one line ot sup
plies, machine shops have more than
they can do; there is a reawakened
vitality in the whole country which
gives the lie to every word' alarm
that hints at general ruin.
The truth is that there never was
such another impressive demonstra
tion of strength and stability.
Though capital is proverbially sensi
tive and fearful, the reserves were
sent to the front with a perfest con
Qdcnce. Nervousness, apprehension,
were justified only in special cases
whoso effect was limited, and, for
the nation at large, unimportant.
It is extremely improbable that
any other country in the world could
have passed through such a flurry
with such suberbself reliance, found
ed upon such constantlj' reassuring
conditions. The figures of an ex
panding trade have not been mis
leading. They have been a true
indicator and the future looks bright
er than ever after the spring storm.
The Fossil Journal thinks it has
caught Tin: Ciuionicu; napping and
it honestly appears to us that it hag.
Now will Brother Stewart adjourn to
the nearest cigar foundry and smoke
a five-center at our expeuse. The
Journal says: "Brother Gourlay of
The Dalles Chronicle didn't use to
be the cold-blooded cuss he appears
to be now, judging from the follow
ing itom that appeared in his daily
of Thursday: 'It is very gratifying
to learn that The Dalles hospital is
now half filled with patients and
there is every prospect that it will
be filled to its fullest capacity be
fore many weeks.' The brother
probably contemplates an armed
tour among bis delinquent subscrib-
era.'
A correspondent writing from
Buffalo says: "California is iraking
an elegant fruit display. While ex
amining it the other day Mr. Dosch,
who is superintendent of the Oregon
exhibit, recognized in the California
display bib own collection from Ore-
gon, which he lonnod the Southern
Pacific for the Paris exposition.
The mnn in charge of the California
jdisplny denied it, whoroupon Mr.
! Dosch turned the jar around nnd
' showed him the Oregon labels on the
I oilier side. I do not know how they
i will settle the rnnttor."
Should the rumor prove true that
Ex-Scnater Puttigrew has been ap
pointed president of the Great
Northern, there will be ono less
calamity- howling, socialistic crank
in the country. A sure cure for
Pettigrew'8 peculiar form of pater
nalistic crankery is to put him in
the way to cot rioh. President
(Pettigrew would in no time become
!a sednte, sober, conservative citizen.
The lona State Register says:
General Weaver is getting frisky
again. It is rumored that he is
looking for the nomination of state
senator from Jasper county. The
general once ran for the presidency
iof the United States, but he is now
ithe mayor of the city of Colfax and
I ought to be satisfied.
It's a poor rule that won't work
I both ways. Mnny a woman has suc
ceeded in mnking a fool of a man,
j and some few women in making a
man of a fool, says the St. Louis
1 Star.
