Lkwihto.v, Idaho, May 14. From a
gentleman who has jUHt arrived from
the Salmon river mining district further
particulars of the war between the sheep
and cattle men are learned. This gentle
man says the story, as told on the range,
is that Clarence Thompson, who was
herding a band of 3000 mutton sheep be
longing to Jackson & Thompson, on

shot a now. A warrant for Ids arrest was
sworn out and was served bv a constable
the next evening, just after he had
bedded the sheep for the night. The
constable refused to allow him to remain
with the sheep, and he was taken to
Grangevllle and word sent to Jackson to
aend a herder for the baud. When Mr.
Jackaon arrived in the morning be found
the aheap widely acatterad, while aix
hundred were lying about on the bedding
place dead, ehot and cut to death, and
among the eheep that were running
about were several hundred wounded. Of
these latter 75 died. The camp was
burned and apparently the sheep had

Peace Reigns in the Southern Philippines
Trade is Being Developed and
the People Prepared for Civil Gov-
.. eminent.
Victoma, B. C, May 15. Accoiding
to advices from the Orient, per steamer
Empress of India, the Philippine com
mission has accomplished a great amount
of important work. In the southern isl
ands, where tbo Insurrection is almos
forgotten, trade is being developed and
the people prepared for civil government.
Even the conservative Moros of Sulu
Mindanao are rinding out that the Ameri
cans are good customers, and communi
cation has been established in places
where outside intercourse was impossible
under Spanish rule. As the commission
visited the various American garrison's
in the Mohammedan country, the
sultan's Dattos and eub-Dattos are
described as coming long distances to
meet the representatives of American
civil rule. Several of the pagan tribes
living about the volcanco of Mount Apo
cime to give testimony before the com
missioners. In describing their relations
with the army, they almoBt invaribly
staled that they had never known more
peaceful times, and all they desired was
the continuance of present conditions.
The commissioners were scheduled to
return to Manila about May 7th, after
which it is planned to organize the
provinces of Northern Luzon. It is
stated that about the beginning of July
a central civil government will be
established in Manila, with Judge Taft
as governor, and a legislative council
composed of Americans and Filipinos.
