the
Spokesman-Review
' says :
These machines arc
i
the most ob-
jectionable gambling devices that:
the ingenuity of man has yet in-1

their earnings, and tbey drain the
community ot a great deal of money,
as nil of them are operated on
"royalty," and a fixed percentage
must be sent away weekly or month
ly to the distant manufacturer.
Hundreds of youths who would
not play at faro or roulette in the
big gambling balls, became fiercely
addicted to the gambling habit from
playing ut the machines.
An impression is conveyed by the
name of the device that it is a mild
form of gambling. This is a mistake.
A nickel seems a small matter, but
the machines have a number of slots,
the players are tempted with the
possibility of winning a number of
prizes, and many risk from 10 to 25
cents at every turn of the wheel.
As only a few seconds are required
to drop in the nickels, press the bar
and determine the result of the
hazard, it is easy to lose 50 cents
within a minute. Many young men,
when the wheels were running, lost
their week's earnings within an hour
or less.
These machines are particularly
pernicious because tbey sit in public
places which young men many of
them minors may frequent and not
lose social standing or escite the
alarm of parents or employers. They
are recruiting stations for the big
public gambling balls. They are
unlawful, and should not be tolerated.
The gold fund in the United
States treasury amounts to the
enormous sum of S5C1,4G9,4G8, as
against considerably less than a
million six or seven years ago when
the free silver agitation was at its
beight and the government, in order
to maintain the gold fund at tbe
lowest permissable Ggure, was
obliged ,to buy gold in open market
by the sale of $262,000,000 .of
United States bonds at a rate of
inlerestr nearly double the market
value of such bonds today. Ko
sooner had the free silver nightmare
vanished by the restoration to power
of a party pledged to maintain the
gold standard than the gold fund
increased by leaps and bounds till
the United States treasury contains
more gold than any similar institu
tion in the world. This astounding
fact, astounding, that is to say, be
cause of tbe suddenness of its ac
complishment, proves to an absolute
demonstration two things: The wis
dom of tbe men who were instru
mental in saving tbe nation from tbe
fell curse of a debased currenoy, and
tbe fact tbat tbe business interests of
tbe country are enjoying an un
paralleled degree of prosperity.

If thepeopleonly knew what we know
about Kodol Dyspepsia Cure, it would
be used in nearly every household, as
there are few people who do not suffer
