TRIP TO PORTLAND MAYBEABANDONED Presidential", Party Will Probably Omit Tour to the Northwest Mrs. Mc Kinlcy is Hotter This Morning. Sax Fuanuisco, May Hi. Secretary Cortolyou tliia mornine i?ave out the following bulletin t8 to Mrs. McKiuley's condition : "Mrs. McKinley rested well during the night nnd thia morning was quite comfortuble, na her phyaioiaua expected hor to be," President McKinley will not decide until later in tho day whether he will go to Sun Joae or not. There is aomo probability of Preaident McKinley abandoning hie propoaed trip to Portland and the Northwest in view of the condition of Mra, McKinley. Un loaa there is radicul change for the better the presidential party will leave for Washington aoon after the celebra tions in this sections are over. Mr. McKinley is very much worried over the condition of his wife, and it is even possible that many of the functions arranged in hia honor for this week may be postponed or dropped altogether. Secretary Oortelyou hoa given notice that Mrs. McKinley should she continue the trip with the president will not un der any circumstances engage in any of the social functions arranged for the party at any place, but that ahe will re main as quiet as possible during the re mainder of the tour. A JJttHlretl by McKinley. Salkm, May 13. It Ima been decided, and was announced todoy, that neither the legislative committee nor Governor Geer will go to the state line to meet President McKinley and hia party. This action lias been taken in compliance with the wishes of President McKinley, expressed through his private secretary. It is the president's desire to have the reception take place at the capital of the state, thus saving the time and confusion of a doable reception. It has been the custom during the present tour for the president to be met by committees at the cities they represent, and it is thought appropriate that the committee representing the whole state should re ceive the president at the capital. "The Evlla of Gambling und the Perils of Making Haste to Be Rich" waa the subject of Iiev. Newel! Dwicht Hillia' sermon last night at Plymouth church, Brooklyn. Dr. Hillis said: ''The evils of drink are familiar to you. There are other evils. But the greatest peril la the insane spirit of gambling, which seems to have taken hold of the people, irrespective of social etanding or religious belief. The ineane desire to get rich quickly iB at the bottom of it all. There is no difference between the news boy who flips coins and the man in Wall Street who buys Btocka on margins on' a chance that they will rise or fall. Both wish to get something for nothing; both are gamblers. "The incessant gambling on all sports has wrought intellectual demoralization to the country. Horseracing is one of the noblest of eports, but it has been de graded and beatialized by gambling. Every Saturday afternoon you see at the race tracks thousands of working girle and men who have families to support, crazy with the intoxication of gambling. As each race is run they stand up, a yelling cursing, purple-faced, brutalized gang. "From the liny lad selling newapapers on the atreet, to men dwelling in a palace, the gambling spirit seems to have invaded all. Where ie thia thing eoinc to end ; It la time we called a halt and began to consider what things are really worth while." Annual services of the church associa tion for the advancement of the interests of labor were held last night in Holy Trinitv church. The Rev. Dr. J. P. Peters, rector of St. Michael's Episcopal church, preached. "The committee of 15,"' he eaid, will make a raid and the gambler who is ar rested doesn't want hiB name to get into the papers. But there aie gamblers in Wall Street who blazon their nameB proudly over their doors and are glad to tell you of their winnings or losses. "We have an exhibition of what harm one man with great wealth can do. No man has the right to manipulate such a deal as waa executed in Wall Street. Each of us owes a duty to our fellow-men, and the man who so far forgqts this duty as to permit himself to become engaged in transactions of such a kind and magni tude ia utterly lost to principle." London, May 13.-3:22 p. m. Sham rock I today beat Sir Thomas Lipton'a new boat by five minutes and five seconds over a triangular couree of about twenty miles. The only possible dis advantage to the challenger was in the fact that she used ber old mainsail which sits worse since its salt water bath of Thursday. ' There waa no discoverable holding back of the challenger, although once or twice she pointed auch a course as left the suspicion that the steersman was not taking advantage of every chance. There ia no doubt that the result of today's trial was distinctly disappointing to those who bad pinned their faith to the new challenger, especially as Sham rock I on the previous spinB has not shown equal quality with the new racer on any point of sailiug with the exception of running. The weather conditions all favored a fair trial with the wind fresh and steady, the course clear of all obstructions and no tides of any consequence. Notice! Your mothers and grandmothers never thought of using anything else for indigestion and biliousness. Doctors were scarce and they seldom heard of appendicitis, nervous prostration or heart failure, etc. They used August Flower to clean out the system and stop fermentation of undigested food, regu late the action of the liver, stimulate the nervous and organic action of the sys tem, and that is all they took when feel ing dull and bad with headaches and other aches.
