8 an Fuancihco, May 12. The sudden
illness of Mrs. McKinley hue en used an
unexpected change in tho itinerary of
President McKinley. Ho urrived in tliie
city quiotly this afternoon several hours
ahead of thu time scheduled. The state
of Mrs. McKlnloy'e health was sueh this,
morning that the president decided to
leave Del Monte and hring his wife to
the home of Henry T. Scott, of tiia city,
where she could have complete rest for
u few days, and where a specialist could
he consulted if necessary. A special of
two cars and u locomotive was made up
from the president's special, and at 12 :!10
the President, Mrs. McKinley, Miss
Harbor, the president's niece, Secretary
Cortelyou and wife, Dr. Itixey and H.
T. Scott and wife left Del Monte for San
Francisco, leaving the remainder of the
presidential party at Del Monte.
Only a few hundred people greeted
the president upon his arrival in this
city. His comiug was not generally
known, and only those who chanced to
see the bulletins posted by the news
papers announcing that the president
would reach tlie city at 4 p. in., awaited
his train. The president, in order to
avoid the crowd that was expected to
assemble at the Southern Pacific depot
at Third and Townaend streets, left the
train with his little party at Valencia
Htreet, a station in the southern part of
the oity. When the train, consisting of
a baggage car and the president's special
coach, stopped at Valencia street, Mrs.
McKinley was carried in a steamer chair
by two colored porters from the private
car to a. closed carriage in waiting. She
was heavily veiled, and the President
and Dr, Kixey followed close behind.
Mrs. McKinley was gently placed in the
carriage and the President and Dr.
Kixey took seats in the same vehicle.
The president was quite pale and looked
serious. The rest of the party followed
in carriages. t

The Teacher mnl Their FrleixlN Spend
ii Iay Mn nl Delightfully.
It is to be regretted that to few took
adyantaee of the delightful excursion
planned by County School Superintend
ent Gilbert for the teachers and their
friends on Saturday.
Starting on thu D. P. & A. N. boat at
7 a. m., the party who went arrived at
Hood River landing at 9, where were
found waiting conveyances for a large
sized excursion party. Expand as we
would, we could only Oil two of the com
modious vehicles provided, and we
started gaily off for an eighteen-mile
drive over hill and dale, along the east
side of beautiful Hood River. Along
our route for miles stretched a smiling
country, covered with beautifully-tilled
fields and blooming fruit trees, with
many a promiee for the future of crisp
and juicy apples, for which this section
is so well known, our agreeable host
pointing out every spot of interest or
note, among them the site for the Hood
River Electric Light Co.'s new plant,
which is to vie with liberty in lighting
the world, and put the wheels in motion
for many a factory and' mill along the
banks of that rushing, turbulent stream.
Our firBt stop was made at Pine Ridge
schoolhouse, where we met a royal wel
come from the teachers and pupils and
their friends. The school term having
ended the day previous, the closing ex
ercises bad been postponed for our en
tertainment, and a most enjoyable little
program was rendered by the pupils,
after a hearty word of welcome had
been given us by Mr. Turner, who for
nearly , forty years haB resided in the
district. This waB responded to by Prof.
Landes in his happiest vein and fol
lowed by several short and pithy little
talks by various others and the national
'anthem by the whole assembly, and
finally all were invited to partake of ice
cream, cake and lemonade under the
pine trees' shade, and a delightful Bur-
prise it proved to us all. The grand
finale was a'rousing cheer for Prof. Gil
bert, and that followed by one for Pine
Ridge school. There the pretty school
building stands, flanked on either Bide
by two grand snow mountains and facing
Point Defiance, grim with pine trees
and flecked with glinting enow banks,
the rich dark greeu and glistening snow
standing out in the sharp contrast na
ture loves so well.
At 12:30 we took our seats again for
the drive, each one of us carrying away
a souvenir of rich, velvety pansies and
daises, which were prepared for us in
profusion. Prof. Thomson, our Hood
River Jehu, took the lines, snapped the
whip, and we bowled off again to feast
our eyes on all the beauty spread on our
right and on our left, passing many at
tractive homes and a schoolhouse, then
crossing Hood river at Tucker's mill and
coming up on to the strawberry plateau
between the Columbia and the mount
ains. The day was perfect as a "day in
June," and nothing was lacking to
make the trip delightful.
It seems tho Hood River farmer raises
alfalfa the first year for hay mows his
crop and markets it at $20 per ton
sends the roots ou through to China and
turns over the soil again on his own side
for strawberry fields planted in the fall.
By spring these plants are doing their
utmost to out-do the alfalfa crop, and
they bring in about $1000 to the acre if
well managed. They are not shipped
by the box, nor by the crate, but literal
ly by the ton. The strawberry plant Is
ubiquitous, but it is on its native heath,
for one of our party told of wild straw
berries in 1S70 growing in profusion as
large as the thumb and a yield of about
thirty gallons, on a space the size of her
parlors, and at one picking. There
were no fish stories told that day.
Arriving at Grapper'e school house
the party indulged in lunch and hilarity
(or an hour or so, the levity being much
enhanced by the addition to the party of
Mr. Truman Butler and his genial wife,
who were glad of an opportunity to meet
some of their old Dalles friends and
neighbors aud drove out from town to
do so. From this point we turned our
faces riverward, passing niMae of irrigat
ing canals and hundreds '(I think) of
pretty little farms, cozy and well kepi,
blooming in the sunshine.
Returning through the shady streets
of the village we again crossed Hood
river on the bridge near its mouth aod
made our way to the steamboat landing,

the Hood River delegation continuing
to wish us God speed. The charming
day was ending as we approached The
Dalles dock on the "Dalles City," whose
officers lent their aid in making the
return trip delightful. Our only regret
was that so many of the teachers were
obliged to miss so much pleasure and
recreation. XXX.
Question Answered.
Yes, August Flower still has the largest
sale of any medicine in the civilized
world. Your mothers and grandmothers
never thought of using anything else for
indigestion and biliousness. Doctors
were scarce and they seldom heard of
appendicitis, nervous prostration or
heart failure, etc. They used August
Flower to cl?an out the system and stop
fermentation of undigested food, regu
late the action of the liver, stimulate the
nervous and organic action of the sys
tem, and that is all they took when feel
in it dull and bad with headaches and
other aches. You only need a few doses
of Green's August Flower, in liquid
form, to make you satisfied there is
nothing serious the matter with you.
