PANIC AND BIG
BOOM IN STOCKS
While Northern Pacific Soars Skyward
Other Securities Slump Off And
Create the Necessity for the Bulls
to Make Easy Terms For the Bears'
Settlement.
New Yokk, May 9. Brokers, specu
lators and others who go to make up the
daily life in Wall street came early to
their offices this morning, in anticipation
of a crucial day. Interest naturally
centered in Northern Pacific. The best
opinion on the etreet was that the Har-riman-Gould-Rockfeller
crowd and the
Hill-Morgan-Vanderhilt interests hove
locked horns. The first figures from
London showed a rally in American
shareB.
.JUMP 01' 130 POINTS.
Northern Pacific opened this morning
with a plunge. The first Bale was at 170,
a gain of ten points. The rise continued
and at 10:45 o'clock cash sales were
made at 300, or 130 points over the open
ing. Union Pacific opened lower.
SAILED UP to 1000.
Soon after 11 o'clock, Northern Pacific
sold for 1000 cash, while other stocks
were tumbling all along the line. Every
thing was panicky, barring Northern
Pacific, and a decline of from 5 to 10 per
cent was common. Union Pacific lost
heavily, early falling from 10G to 85.
Scenes on the Stock Exchange were wild
in the extreme, brokers fighting and
tearing about like mad. In 1895,
Northern Pacific was selling for 2. At
noon, a healthy reaction took place.
At 2 o'clock, Northern Pacific was
quoted at 300 cash. While a panic and
turmoil were on in the Stock Exchange,
the curb was having a slump of its own.
Standard Oil fell to 171. Later, it re
covered and sold to 700.
II0W TIIKY SAVED A PANIC.
J. P. Morgan & Co., Kuhn, Loeb &
Co.. and Street & Norton, representing
the big interests that have been fighting
for control of the Northern Pacific, did
much to check the panic by officially
announcing they would not demand to
day the shares of Northern Pacific due
them. After this, Northern Pacific
dropped to 600 and the general market
began to go up.

Harney Cm", May 9. John Maher
shot and killed John Wyatt and then
shot himself, both dying instantly, here
last Saturday morning.
Maher was an old pioneer of this
county, having come here in 1883, and
located on a ranch four miles west of
this place, where he made a start in the
stock business. Wyatt came here about
twelve years ago and bought a small
farm near this city, where of late years'
he has been the leading grain-raiser of
this vicinity.
The two men have always been the
best of friends and a few days ago Maher
complained of being sick and came to
Wyatt'a place to have Wyatt take him
to Baker City to be treated. They were
to have started the morning of the shoot
ing, and Maher had gone out and fed the
team, while Wyatt prepared brea fast,
which was on the table when the two
men were found. It is supposed that
Maher went suddenly insane and while
be waa trying to kill himself, Wyatt inter
fered and wap shot,
The men were both single. Maher baa I
no relatives living in this county, and
probably baa none in the state, although
several yeara ago a brother lived in John
Day valley. He was a native of Ireland
and waa 53 yeara of age. Wyatt has
relativea living all over the county and
waa born in Indiana in 1863, and waa 38
yeara of age.

Result of Abolition of Canteen.
Chicago, May 7. The report of the
committee of ministers which recently
investigated charges that the abolition
of the canteen at Fort Sheridan had re
sulted in much drunkenness among tbe
soldier, has made its report. The re
port embraces statements by many
persons living in Higbwood and other
plates near the fort, and shown that the
charges of greater disorder were untrue.
For the three months preceding the
abolition of the canteen tbe percentage
of arrests was 5.2; for tbe three following,
4,9.
