"While I have no doubt," said Mr. llarwood laat night, "that the course taken by our clients will surprise (be Court of Claims, my faith in the equity of the cause ia unshaken. While the Maine waa not mentioned in the treaty btitween ttiia country and Spain, it was expressly proviaioned that the United States and Spain mutually relinquish all claims for indemnity, national and individual, of every kind, or of its eitl .tins or subjects, against tho other gov ernment that may have arisen since the beginning of the hue insurrection in Cuba. The United States will adjudi cate and settle the claims of its cltizone against Spain. "The only thing we have to prove Is that prior to the ratification of the treaty containing this article our citi zens had valid claims against the Span ish crown for injuries suffered in Ha vana harbor on the night of February 15." Election In UitHliitore. Uai.timokk, May 7. The municipal election in this city today, the first one of importance held under the new ballot law, resulted in a sweeping victory for the republicans. They carried 18 out ot the 24 wards, electing eighteen members to the first branch city council and all three candidates for the second branch. Only about 05 per cent of the entire registered vote was polled and the colored vote was very light. Demourata attribute their defeat to (actioual ditteroneop, the friends of Mayor Hayes, who met with defeat in the primaries, beintr arrayed against the followers of Freeman Rosin. The msj mties were greatly reduced in the six wards carried by the democrats. HUo Murdered Her llucbautl. Pouoiikkki'hik, N. V., May 7. An interesting point has been raised here undorthe pension laws. LIz.Ih llalluday, an inmate of the Maltewan State Hospital for the Criminal Insane, is an Applicant for a pension. Her husband wub a soldier and was murdered by her at her home near Warwick, Orange county, N. Y,, more than three years ago. He had been missing (or several days when it was discovered that she had killed him and hidden his body under u pig pen. She was taken to the asylum at Mattewan a raving maniac, and now claims the pension of a soldier's widon, notwithstanding the fact that she became a widow by murdering her husband. Colonel W. L. Delacy, a local pension attorney, eaye that under the law or June 27, 1800, ho is entitled to her pension, as it excludes only the widows of those who commit suicide. After ttttcl Star Line. London, May 7. Simultaneously with today's meeting of the Leyland Line ahoreholders to vote upon the agreement with J. Pierpout Morgan, comes a reiteration of the statement that the Morgans are about to acquire the Red Star line as well as the Atlantic Transport line. The Leyland Line shareholders unan imously confirmed the Morgan-Eiler-muii agreement. Tho American Line officials here, however, deny the report that Mr. Mor gan haB acquired the Red Star Line. Nkw Yokk, May 7. James A. Wright, socoud vice-president of the Inter national Navigation Company, was shown the dispatch of the Associated Preea from London referring to the re iteritated report that Mr. Morgau was about to acquire the Red Star Line. He said : "I have nothing to say. The state ment lias been contradicted before. I know nothing about it. Uuuium Will Auit riutt Amendment. Havana, May 7. STORY A FALSEHOOD President Will Not Refuse to Meet Kruqer On the Other Hand, He Will Be Glad to Receive the Former Boer President at the White House. New Yokk, May 7. The denial in positive terms in official circles that the president stated to anybody claiming to represent "Oom Paul" Kruger that he would not receive him at the While Houee was made in a way, says a special to the Tribune from Washington, which seems to indicate that the pre&ident has been communicated with on this subject, since he left Washington, and desired it to beco.no known that he is being mis represented in this matter. In point of fact, various persons authorized to speak for the president declare that on more than one occasion when the subject lias been referred to in his presence the presi dent has said that lie would be glad to receive Mr. Kruger on the same terms and with the eame hospitality as he re ceives other distinguished foreigners. This could be done without compromis ing the government in any way. It is pointed out that when the Boei envoys were in Washington a year ago they were treated with marked courtesy nnd consideration .by the president and every member of his cabinet with whom they came in contact. It is farther pointed out that if former Preeident Kruger comes here he will appear in a strictly private capacity ,not being iuvested even with the official chaiacter with which the Boer envoys were clothed, and that therefore the president would have no possible reaaon for refusing to meet bim. Hanker Scores Ministers. New Yokk, May 7. Banker Warner Vannorden told the Presbyterian Union at its meeting last nigbt that ministers took too long vacation during the sum mer. Some of the most prominent min isters in the city were present. Mr. Vannorden in discussing the vacation of ministers, said: "It has become nothing Iobs than a scandal that so many ministers leave their churches from three to four months of the year. Merchants and bankers do not get any such vacations. We are not able to take them. There 1,000,009 people living in the tenements, and they cannot go away fot the summer. If we are going to bring the gospel to the people, it is not a good thing for the leader in the work to shirk." Boom for Hauua. Washington, May 7. In a cabled in terview from London, Perry S. Heath, secretary of the Republican National Committee, takes occasion to boom Hanna for the Presidency, saying, he would be the easiest man to nominate and the easiest mau to elect in 1001." Hanna himself says it all stuff and nonsense, and that he punctured a boom started for him by Senator Scott, of West Virginia. At the same time it ia no doubt pleasing to Hanna to be thus mentioned for the Presidency, but he is shrewd enough politician to un derstand that he would not be an ideal candidate. i itloun Hinaahere' l'arty. Toi'kka, Kas., May 7. A movement la on foot here to organize a new politi cal party which shall champion the cause of t.he saloon smashera. Those agitating the organization are mostly followers of Mra. Nation and the party will be known as the "Nation party." Mrs. J. P. White ia at the bead of the movement. She says that neither of the old parties will give the aid expect ed in the suppression of the saloon traf fic.
