Ttie engineers who have been making a survey for a canal In Nicaragua huvo finished their work und the last party will leave Grey town for home on the steamer that Bails the 11th of May. A few people will be left to pay the bills and look after the property of the government that will be Htoreil there, but the survey is practical ly done and a route has been selected and staked out in detail. The rough cstimato of the coat of constructing a canal along this line is $210,000,000, but that is subject to a correction when the fund report of the engineers is received. The cost of a canal across the isth imiH of Panama with five locks is esti- muted to be $140,000,000, in addition to what has already been spent. The French company will demand anywhere from $90,000,000 to $125,000,000 for their frunchiae, property and the wor tttey have already done, but would probably settle for $75,000,000. A canal on a sea level according to the engineers would coat $250,000,000 in round numbers, with one lock at the Panama end in order to protect it from the remarkably high tides that prevail there varying from twenty, five to thirty feet twice a day. In the opinion of all engineers a eea level canal ncroas the isthmus of Panama is the most desirable, although it would be the moat expensive. Thegreateat objection to it is the length of time required for its construction, which la estimated at twenty years. It is believed that with the work already done a canal with locks ncroas Panama could be completed in sii or seven years. Ten years is the time fixed lor the Nicaragua route. The reason that the sea level canal at Panama would take so long a time is Mint the space it limited and t would be posaible to work only aamall number of men and excavators. Tbe heavy digging ia all at the water aheda, within the limits of a few railee. When tbe engineers return from Nicaragua the coramleilou wjll complete ita final report to be submitted to con Kreu In December. l'reNltlent at El Palo. Ei, Pa ho, Tex., May C The Ameri can and Mexican flags were intertwined in th decoration of the plaza, where tbe official greeting of President Mc Kinley and cabinet took place this morning. The presence on the stand of General Hernandez, the personal repre sentative of President Diaz, gave inter national significance to the event. There were thousands of Mexicans in the vast concourse of people and their enthusiasm was almost as wild as that of the Ameri cans, The president's speech was especially noticeable on account of his injunction to the people not to be alarmed about imperialism. There was, he said, no imperialism except the imperial power of the sovereign people of the United States. At coon the presidential party resumed its journey westward. QuttHtlou AnHwered. Yea, August Floweret!!! has the largest sale of any medicine in the civilized world. Your mothers and grandmothers never thought of using anything elan for indigestion and biliousness. Doctors were scarce and they seldom heard of appendicitis, nervous prostration or heart failure, etc. They used August Flower to clean out the system and stop fermentation of undigested food, regu late the action of the liver, stimulate the nervous and organic action of the sys tem, and that ia all they took when feel ing dull and bad with headaches and other aches. You only need a few doses of Green's August Flower, in liquid form, to make you satisfied there ia nothing serious the matter with you. Get Green's prize almanac. Clarke & Falk'e. 1 NOTICE. Crawford, Prop, Superior Article Can Be Produced in Porto Rico, Hawaii and the Philip pines Large Consumption in America. New Yokk, May 0. That all the cof fee consumed in the United States can be grown in the islands which have been acquired since the outbreak of the Span ish war is the conclusion reached by the bureau of statistics of the treasury de partment at Washington, after a careful study of the coffee-producing capabilities of the new possessions. The islands in which coffee cad be successfully grown are Hawaii, Porto Rico and the Philippines. Porto Rican coffee, in the markets where it is well known, is regarded as tiie best in tbe woild, and it is tbe conclusion of the bureau of statistics that when coffee plantations have been developed in the Philippines and Hawaii, all of the$l, 000,000 or more which the United States sands abroad every week for coffee can be expended among the inhabitants of our own islands. Porto Rican coffee h.is long commanded high prices in European markets, though it has been comparative ly little known in the United States. Developments of coffee culture in Ha waii during the last few years have teen very satisfactory in the quality produced, and tbe prices realized. In the Philippines the product is of high grade. The fact that the United StateB ia by far tbe greatest coffee consuming coun try, and i6 steadily increasing her con sumption, suggests tbat American capital and energy may turn their atten tion to tbe promising field now opened in the islands. American coffee im portations during thenine months end ing with March, 1901, amounted to 017,- 344,000 pounds, with a value of $45,218, 000, a sum nearly $5,000,000 in excess of the value of the coffee imports of tbe same months of tbe preceding fiscal year, indicating that for the full fiscal year tbe total value of tbe coffee imported into tbe United States will be about $00,000, 000.
