; Salem Statesman that the receiver of
The Salem Journal intimate? that ' the banking house of Gilbert Bros.,
the only subject the Oregonian knows that closed its doors a short time ago,
anything about is religion, whereas ( is agreeably surprised with the con
of ail subjects it knows the least ! dition in which he finds the affairs of
about it. Albany Democrat. , the bank as an invantory of its assets
In a short time it will be William
juciMDiej, u. n. v., cue xiu.tu.u
University corporation having lately
expressed itself unanimously in favor
of dubbing the president Doctor of
Laws.
Some one has pertinently remarked
that so far as the United States is j
concerned, the situation is just this:
Cuba shall have the right to do as I
I
sue pieases as long as sue incases io ,
do right.
A few fool Oregon papers already
ore trying to get Corbetl started for
the nest senatorial contest, says the
Albany Democrat. This is an out
rage on the people. Let us have a
new deal.
The persistent disparagement of
the Columbia river and the port ,
i
of Portland, by the Astoria papers,
is as disgusting and ridiculous as it
is incomprehensible. Will Astorians
never learn that they cannot build
themselves up by pulling other
people down? Portland's interests
as a seaport are Oregon's interests,
and it is an ill bird that fouls its own
nest.
The latest boycott is that of the
nickel-in-the-slot operators of As
toria, who have mutuallv agreed not
to contribute in any way to any of
the churches whose ministers are en-1
gaged in a crusade against the
machines. If the Astoria ministers
are what we take them to be this
ridiculous boycott will have a ten
dency to make them fight the
gambling devices all the harder.
- '
Our calamity brethren will find J
little consolation in the report sent
out by the Portland planing mill
'
proprietors to the effect that help is
very scarce notwithstanding that
wages range from fc2.2o to $3 per
day. Yet the time is not far distant
when a report of that kind, which ia
now so common that it hardly excites
comment, would not have been true
of any district or employment in the
United States.
Charles G. Hodges, justice of the
peace at Sands, N. C, informs the
attorney of James Green, the Ska
mania county murderer, that Green
Is a cousin of William Jennings
Bryan. If that does not save Green's
neck nothing else will. The letter
says that Green's friends back in
North Carolina purpose to do every
thing possible towards obtaining a
new trial for bim. But Green will
stretch hemp in the long run, just
the same.
The first child born in the new
mining camp of Asbwood made its
appearance on the 21st ult. It is of
tbe female persuasion and the little
lady evidently came to port without
ballast, for she weighed only four
pounds. But the miners are Jubt as
proud ot her as if she bad weighed
a ton, and on hor arrival they
promptly put up a purse ot 50 to
( be put out nt interest and presented
j to her when she comes of ngo. The
' little ono belongs to Mr. and Mrs.

christened her Oregon. Ma' she

Citizens of "Wallowa county, to
I the number of 502, have petitioned
Secretary of State Hitchcock to issue
orders to Indians to cease trespassing
within the count' where, it is al-1
leged, they illegal' destroy game

and their drunken orgies are offensive
to the settlers. A similar petition,
, signed by the same parties, has been
presented to Governor Geer, urging
him to use his best endeavors to
secure action on the part of the
United States government.
It is gratifying to learn from the
progresses.
