THE AMERICAN
SITUATION
Senator Beveridge's Address at Des
Moines References to Cuba, the
Philippines, Economic Changes
and the Eastern Question.
Dks Moinek, April 27. United StateB
Senator Albert J. Beveridge, of IndiuiiH,
delivered the principal address at the
annual meeting tonight of the Grant
Club, the leading social and political
club of Dee Moines, on "The American
Situation ; We Will Fight It Out on This
Line." Senator Beveridge said :
"Tiio purpose of all American states
man ship with reference to Cuba has
been the welfare of the Cuban people as
related to the welfare of the American
people. Cubau interests and American
interests, Cuban safety and American
safety, Cuban prosperity and American
prosperity, are identical in the nature of
things. When we provide that Cuba
Bhall never become entangled in fnteitrn
relations, we are not destroying Cuban
independence ; we are establishing it and
Betting metes and bounds where all inter
ference shall meet the seutiuel of Ameri
can authority, and when we provide
that American guns from Cuban ports
shall command the entrances to the
gulf, we are not impairing the safety of
the Cuban people, but are guaranteeing
it by the blood of every American
soldier who maiiB our Cuban garrisons,
pledged to be shed to the last drop, If
ueed be, iu defense of the Cuban people,
"The Philippines came to us by con
quest and purchase. Over this dominion
we are establishing order and law more
rapidly than the same achievement ever
was accomplished anywhere or at any
time under similar circumstances. When
this work is doue, when the foundation
of a permanent peace is finally laid, an
orderly government must be erected and
then maintained. This work is iu our
hands. We cannot band it over to any
other power, and, even if we could justify
a policy of retreat, even if we were will
ing to abdicate the commercial throne of
the (ar East, ttiia would not alter con
ditions, for none of the powers who hun
ger for the Philippines would permit
either of the others to acquire them from
us. The Philippine situation is that our
business there is inextricable and per
manent."
Of the trusts he said: "He is indeed
a daring pessimist who denieB that the
stock of the mighty modern combination
of production which controls the necessi
ties of the people will finally be held by
the people themselves small quantities
in the hands of a vast number of indi
viduale instead of vest quantities in the
hands of each of a small number of indi-

remedies but iot no relief until I was
recommended by Mesers. Geo. F. Parsons

CALLAHAN
NOT GUILTY
Acquitted of Complicity iu the Cudahy
Kidnaping Judge Severely Ar
raigned the Jurj.
Omaha, Neb., April 28. James Calla
han was declared notguilty, shortly after
9 o'clock this morning of any complicity
in the kidnaping of Edward Cudahy, Jr.
The judge evidently expected another
verdict and was openly disappointed.
"It is impossible for me to understand,"
lie said, "how twelve intelligent men
could have agreed upon such a verdict
after listening to the testimony. The
defendant could not have chosen more
wisely if he had been selecting his own
representatives, and the community
could not have made a more unsatis
factory eelection. This jury is discharged
without the compliments of the court."
Callahan's attorneys were not present,
and the defendant expressed a desire to
thank the jurors in his own behalf. This
the court refused to permit. He said the
jury did not deserve any thanks.
Two other counts still hang against
Callahan. He was at once rearrested
under these. There is doubt, however,
whether the state wiil be able to bring
the case to trial.
Chief of Police Donahue announces
that the $50,000 offered for the appre
hension of Patrick Crowe will be with
drawn, lie says it is one thing to arrest
the culprit and another to convict. The
reward of $50,000 offered jointly by the
city and Edward Cudahy, however, will
still remain in force.
As far as could be ascertained there
waB at no time any serious difference to
the opinions oi Callagan's innocence
among the jury. Three were inclined
to favor a verdict of guilty, but were soon
convinced by their colleagues that a
reasonable doubt existed.
General Cowlin, leading the prosecu-
cution, says that Callahan will probably
be released in the morning. The other
charges against him, grand larceny and
false imprisonment, are virtually syn
onymous, roe state would be obliged
to depend upon the same evidence as
that which has already been brought
out and there is doubt in any event
whether Callahan could be tried on a
charge so closely akin to that on which
he has been declared innocent. County
Attorney Shields will be guided by this
view and Callahan's liberty is practical
ly assured.
Morphine Poisoning-.
New Yokk, April 27. John A. Elliott,
a member of the Elliott Press, a printing
company of this city, died of morphine
poisoning in an uptown drug store early
tills morning. A stranger had brought
him into the store and for hours after
the death the police were investigating
the case. This afternoon Etnil P. Augot,
a Maiden Lane diamond seller, volun
tarily told the officers that he was the
man who was with Elliott. He says he
spent several hours last night with him
and that Elliott drank a good deal. To
ward midnight Elliott got him to buy
some morphine for him at a drug store
and this he took while Augot was not
watching bim. Augot took him to the
drug store to get medical treatment for
him and then went home.
Elliott was well known in political
circles, his company printing the Tam
many Times. He was at one time con
nected with various Iowa newspapers
and had been associated, it is said, with
the Des Moines Register. He afterward
conducted papers in Dead wood, S. D.,
and was for ten years or more a resident
of Chicago.
Caught Dreadful Cold.
Marion Kooke, manager for T. M.
Thompson, a large importer of fine
millinery at 1068 Milwaukee Avenue,
Chicago, says: "During the late severe
weather I caught a dreadful eold which
kept me awake at night and made me
unfit to attend my work during the day.
One of my milliners was taking Chamber-
alu'a Cough Remedy for a severe cold at
that time, which seemed to relieve her
so quickly that I bought some for myself,
It acted like magic aud I began to im
prove at once. I am now entirely well
aud feel very pleased to acknowledge its
menu." or sate uy uiaxetey, ttie

Imagination supplies a groat part' of the pleasures of life. In no ease is this so
well illustrated as in the fact that many men will pay outrageously high prices to have
their clothes made to measure, because they imagine they get a suit superior to ready
made. They did once they don't now.
