Missionary Takes Vigorous Exception
to Charges of Looting Tells of
Occupying boxers' Houses.
San Fuancjihco, April 20 Rev. W. S.
Anient, of the American Board of Foreign
Missions of the Congregational church,
whose collection of indemnity for dam
aged done by Boxers in China Iihb caused
considerable direnssion, tttkes vigorous
exception to the criticism made by Mark
Twain and others as to the alleged mis
conduct of the missionaries. He says:
"We found ourselves at the close of
the siege with 500 native Christians upon
our hands, no food, noclothing, no money
and every Christian house burned. On
the very day of the arrival of the allied
forces we were informed that we must
leave the British legation, as it was to
be used as headquarters for the officers
of the British army. I immediately
thought of h Mongol Prince, Hsi Ling,
who was an ally of the Boxers, and
whose place was the headquarters of the
Boxers and blacklegs. We found the
prince's palace entirely empty, and the
next day we brought up our native
Christians and occupied the deserted
place. In that house and Its neighbor
ing houses that we occupied, we put
more than 400 people. We took only
abandoned property.
"The only food in the prince's palace
was a bit of rice. We decided to sell
the clothing and curios found on the
premises and realized $2500 in gold. They
were bought by British and American
officers at a private sale of two weeks'
duration.
"Natlvo ChriHtiaus brought up furs
sables which they had purchased at u
low price from wealthy Chinese who
fearud they might be looted by the mill
tary people, and who were anxious to
dispose of them for a little money. These
articles were sold at our place to British
and other ottlcers. I considered that
that was a fair, honest speculation,
which Injured nobody md that bene

Officer! to Flay Ball.
Salem, April 20. It is proposed by
Governor Geer and the officers of the
cipitol to organize a base ball nine in
the state house, and arrange for a con
test on the diamond by the state officers.
There are enough gentlemen in the sev
eral departments, including the supreme
court, to make up two good nines, many
of the officials having made excellent
records as all-around athletes end sports
men in their college dayr, and an inter
esting contest is promised. Efforts will
be made to secure the Willamette Uni
versity catnpuB for the contest, and the
two teams are expected to go into train
ing at once, with a view to having an
early contest. There is a possibility if
tne officials will consent to the arrange
inent uf buying the added attraction of
a baseball game by the state officers on
the occasion of the visit in Salem of
President McKinley and his party, on
May 22d, as an important number on
the program.

Washington, April 2G. Senator John
W. Daniel, of Virginia, several days ngo
addressed a letter to President McKinley,
indorsing the application of General
George Washington Custis Lee, sub
mitted by him in behalf of Miss Marie
Custis Lee, his sister, for restoration of
the relics which he (General Lee), be
came owner upon the death of his
mother, who was the wife of General
Robert E. Lee. President McKinley
has written Senator Daniel a letter
setting forth that the relics were turned
over to General McDowell, then in com
mand there, by a servant of the Lee
family. The general sent them to the
Patent Office for safe keeping, whence
they were transferred to their present
place of deposit, the Smithsonian
Institute. Says the president.
"All the government did was to accept
the trust of their custody at the time
when the owner could not protec them,
and they were consequently exposed to
risk of destruction. The need for such
protection having ceBBed and the trii9t
voluntarily assumed having been dis
charged, it will afford me great satisfac
tion to give direction for the restoration
to the present head of a historic family
of these cherished heirlooms of the
Father of His Country."

Skattle, April 20. After one of the
hardest fought legal battles ever record
ed in the city, the gamblers here have
won out against the Seattle Law and
Order League, and the cases were dis
missed by Municipal Judge George yes
terday, before whom they were tried.
The cases were won by the gamblers' at
torney on mere technicalities, one of
them being that no proof was given that
the men arraigned were in any way con
nected with the gambling houses under
trial. The gamblers are aware that they
have won very important cates, and now
openly defy the Law and Order League
to prosecute them, as they think they
can win and all times that they can win

Tragic Death of a Burglar
Chicago, April 20. A special to the
Tribune from Omaha, Nsb., says: Hard
pressed by the constables, a burglar,
thought to be Z. C. Worley, leaped into
the Missouri river at Penton, la., and
perished in midstream in full view of
his pursuers. By chance a farmer had
come upon the burglar's booty, bidden
in his field, and -for two nights several
men lay in wait, surprising the thief last
night. The thief made a bold dash for
liberty and was chased to the Missouri
river, where be plunged in. The con
stables had set off from shore when they
say their man disappear. The current
washed the body into shallow water,
where it was recovered sometime after
wards. A book in the dead man's
pocket bore the name Z. O. Worley.
Caught a Dreadful Void.
Marion Kooke, manager for T. M.
Thompson, a large importer of flue
millinery at 1058 Milwaukee Avenue,
Chicago, says: "During the late severe
weather I caught a dreadful cold which
kept me awake at night and made me
unfit to attend my work during the day.
One of my milliners was taking Chamber-
Iain's Cough Remedy for a severe cold at
that time, which seemed to relieve her
so quickly that I bought some for myself.
It acted like magic and I began to im
prove at once. I am now entirely well
and feel very pleased to acknowledge its
merits." for sale by Blakeley, the
druggist.
