2l)cDnllcG VOL. XIII THE DALLES, OREGON, TUESDAY, APRIL 23. 1901. NO. 68 IS STILL A MYSTERY No Unlit On Failure of the Vancouver Hank The Body of President Hrown Was Laid at Rest Yesterday. Vancouvku, Wash., April L'2. There were no new developments today eon cuniititf the ftiiluro of the First Niitional Hank, mill the sensational double suicide that occurred in connection therewith. J'.unk Examiner Maxwell, who is acting us temporary receiver, has as yet nothing to give out in connection with thefuilure and the cause of it is still shrouded in niyHlury. The bodies of the dead preBidunt and cashier wore removed to their respective houses last night after dark. The grief of the families of tlie deceased oflicialB is pitiful in the extreme. While enough of the condition of the bank has leaked out to satisfy the depositors that the wrecking of the bank was deliberately planned and systematically carried out, still no suspician attaches that the fami lies of the deceased oflicers knew any thing concerning it, and the double Hliock of the startling disclosures attend ing the failure, and the subsequent an nouncement of the remarkable suicide full with crushing force upon them. Ilrown's wife and daughter, the latter being Mrs. Harriet Hrown Carpenter, were both ill at the time. S. W. Hrown, the aged fathor of the deceased president of the bank, is suid to be in a dying condition as u result of tiie terrible hap pening. Ho is 82 years of age. It is now certain that neither oflicial went home after leaving the bank Fri day evening. It is also practically proven that the fatal shots, which ended the lives of both, were fired Friday even ing about 7 :!i0 o'clock. No man has yet been found who saw either man after they left the bank at G o'clock, one hour and u half before they ure supposed to have killed themselves. It was given out today by members of the Hrown family, that Hrown also left a dying message to las wife, which was found on bis person. It was scribbled a leaf of a email memorandum book. This book is iu the possession of the fam ily, and could not be seen. The committee of prominent citizens who requosted Levi Ankeny, the Walla Walla banker, to reorganize the wrecked bank, are as yet unable to report results. Mr. Ankeny is favorable to the project, but can do nothing until the investiga tions of the controller of the currency reach that stage that he can make a statement of the bank's condition. Sneftk Over Itorder. Nkw Yokk, April 22. A special to the Herald from Washington says: Assistant Secrotary of the Treasury Taylor will ap appoint in a few days an immigration inspector and assign hint to the special duty of making an investigation of the fraudulent admission of immigrants into the United States. Steamship lines at New York have found recently that their steamers have brought comparatively few immigrants to the United States, and inquiry devel oped that persons desirous of avoiding inspection went to Canada and then tried 10 enter the states over the border. New York has received many of this class. Mexico has again served as a base for 11 ... i. . .... me entrance oi uninese into tins conn try. A report received at the treasury department shows that 2000 Chinamen were taken to Mexico and emyloped on the Mexican Central railroad. Fifteen hundred of these men quickly crossed the border, Bnd all except I!00, who were arrested and deported, are now under the American flag. A letter from Countess Sophia Tolstoi to Mon signore Antoni, Metropolitan of St. Petersburg, and the Metropolitan's answer, are published in the official Ecclesiastical Messenger. After declar ing her unalterable determination to die in the orthodox church, the countess castigates Monsignore Antoni and the Holy Synod for the secret circular to the clergy forbidding the Count Tolstoi's burial with the rites of the church. The expression, "spiritual hangman," sea sons the countess' charge that the ser vants of (he church have rejected the law of love for world power and pride. She concludes by anticipating a hypocritical refutation of her position. The Metropolitan's.answer not illogic ally contends that Count Tolstoi first disassociated himself from the orthodox faith and that the Holy Synod merely took note of his heterodoxy. Monsignore Atiioni says: "You are receiving expressions of sym pathy from the whole world, but I do not believe that thev will comfort vou. There is a human and a divine glory." Night Wan tier Terror, "I would cough nearlyall night long,' writes Mrs. Chas. Applegate, of Alex andria, Ind., "and could hardly get any sleep. American and Dutch traders are reported to be driving English salesmen out of the great met ropolitan meat market at Bmithfield, says the London correspondent of the Tribune. It is said that the Bum of .1(3, 000 was paid recently by American traders to acquire a stall in the Central Avenue, and that another American firm paid 12,500 for an inferior position. This matter is receiving a good deal of attention now, and the home secretary will be questioned on the subject in the house of commons. "Last winter I was confined to my bed with a very bad cold on the lungs. Noth iug gave me relief. Finally my wife bought a bottle of One Minute Cough Cure that affected a speedy cure.
