OREOONIAN'S PART IN "A
MESTOUS CONFLICT."
HO
Tbe following is clipped from an
editorial that appeared in the Ore
gonian of the 18th, entitled "A
Momentous Conilict:
Take out of Christianity today the
atonement, the meaning of Christmas
and Easter, the sure reward of
heaven, the certain penalties ot hell,
and wtiat would you have left? How
effective a religion would the world
wake up to, on the nest morning
after these doctrines were stricken
from the faith of the millions?
Nothing is more certain than that
today, however it will be in the
future, these beliefs are absolutely
necessary to the preservation of the
moral order. It is his turn to speak
who can show why it is that only out
of orthodoxy does the true convert
ing, regenerating force arise, or how
this intense moral conviction and
religious fervor can be built up on
the philosophy of Spencer and the
religion of Renan.
Truer words than these were never
penned, and yet for many long years
the Oregonian has never ceased to
cast the full force of its unquestioned
ability on the side of those who have
assailed these "fundamental" Christ
ian beliefs as the credulous super,
stitions of an effete age; beliefs which
it now, with most refreshing incon
sistency, affirms to be absolutely
necessary to the preservation of the
moral order!
The Ciikoniclk is in no wise sur
prised that the Portland Catholic
Sentinel should warn the big daily
that its continued assaults upon
"doctrines which are deemed most
sacred by all who deservedly bear
tbe name of Christian" will compel
the editor of that paper to do all in
his power to persuade the Catholic
people of Oregon to refuse the
entrance of the Oregonian into their
homes. We believe there are man'
thousand Protestant Christians in
Oregon who teel as the editor of the
Sentinel does.
Tiik Chuonici.k has no desire to
give utterance to a single harsh word
in this connection. It has a most
sincere admiration for the many ex
cellent qualities the Oregonian pos
sesses as a newspaper, hut our careful
perusal of the pages of that paper for
more than a quarter of a century
has generated an abiding conviction
that the Oregonian has done more to
destroy tbe religion of Christ and
undermine tbe faith of the people in
tbe doctrines so ably defended by
Dr. Hill in bisjsorinoD of last Sunday
than all the anti-Christians in tbe
suto put together. Harsh words, do
you say? Be it so. We cannot
help it, not oven If it be an aggriva
tion to say that they are in no sense
the product of a momentary impulse
but tbe settled conviction of many
years.
Tbe Christ of tbe New Testament
and of history was "uniquely divine,"
God over all, blessed forever," and
M auob commands loving obedience,
or He was an im poster whose oUim
oo humanity is contempt of His pre
tentions. And there Is oo middle
ground. Destroy men's faith in a
Christ supremely divine and you
leave millions without rudder or
compass on a shoreless sea. But this
is precisely what the Oregonian has
been doing for many years and, we
fear, with moat deplorable success.
The following refreshingly sensible
rcwarks appear in tbe Eugene Guard
of the 1 (J tli. Coming from an in
tensely democratic source they are
all the more entitled to respectful
consideration : "President McKin
lcy has acted wisely in according to
British demands for neutrality of the
Panama canal in case of war. War
abrogates treaties between combat
ants, anil is sullleiunt excuse for a
disregard of treaties with friendly
nations should the exigencies of tbe
occasion demand. In tlifa event of
a war in which this country should
be engaged requiring the control of
the canal against the enemy we
would take the canal, then make
apologies afterward. The geograph
ical conditions give the United States
every advantage. We are right
against the canal while the European
powers have an ocean between it
and them.
"Tbe present financial operations
of the treasury disclose a degree of
wealth and public confidence in the
United States that has never before
been reached in this or any other
country," says the Washington cor
respondent of the Chicago Record
Herald. Catarrh Cannot lit. (lured.
with local applications, as they cannot
reach tne seat of ttie disease. Catarrh
is a blood or constitutional disease, and
in order to cure it vou must take inter
nal remedies. Hali's Catarrh Cure ir
taken internally, and acts directly on
the blood and mucous surfaces. Hall's
Catarrh Cure is not a quack medicine.
It was was prescribed by one of the best
physicians in this country tor years, and
is a regular prescription. It is composed
of the best tonics known, combined with
the best blood purifiers, acting directly
on the mucous surfaces. The perfect
combination of the two ingredients is
what produces such wonderful results in
curing Catarrh, bend for testimonials,
