j Tin' Independent gives the stutietica
of thu churches for the year 1900. By
Tar the largest gain has been unions the
Lutherans. They como first with 9V
OOOjy tho Methodists come second with
52.000; the Disciple? of Christ, or Gamp
bellites, third, with H'.'.OOO; the Episco
palian" fourth, with almost 17,000; the
Fro8byterinns filth, with about i:i,000;
while the Baptist, ranking second in
fiizo, have gained only about 5,000. The
percentaue of gain iB as follows: Luth
erans .0o0; Disciples .028; Episcopali
ans .26; Methodists about .009; Presby

flow does Elder .1. B. Lister's state
ment, in his sermon last night at the
Christian church, that his denomination
hart made greater progress, so far as ad
dition of members is concerned, than all
the other denominations taken together,
auree with tho figures given above?
The corresponding secretary of the Ore
gon Christian Missionary Convention
evidently, like manv others, knowe very
little about the doings of churches out
side of his own in this country. This is
the only way we can explain some of
his utterances last night. Growtli and
great prosperity is not something of
which the church represented by Elder
Lister can boast as peculiar to itself.
There has been great progress in all the
Protestant bodies; the percentage of
increase in the last ten years beint 113,
larger than that of the population of the
tt..!....i o. .... 1 1 ... m
u 11 lieu ctaies, nint'ii was uuiv -i per
cent. It is manifest from this tiiat in
spite of all infidel declarations to the
contrary, the church is grandly moving
on and steadily increasing in growing
prosperity and power, Of the work
and achievmenta of some churches peo
ple hear comparatively little, not be
cause they 3re not doing anything, but
because they do it quietly and witli very
little flare of trumpets.
Another fact the church statistics of
the last year should impress on the
minds of Christians is the superiority of
that evangelical system which trains up
the youth of ttie land by steady steps
into church membership. The bodiee
whose accessions are least reliable are
those that have no system of indoctrina
tion. The denominations which have gained
.ino3t in the past year are the Lutheran
and the Episcopalian. The former, ac
cording to the Independent, which is
not a Lutheran paper either, and there
fore may not be believed to say anything
particularly favorable to that body un
less it ba true, exceeded in memherB
added the accessions of the other four
largest denominations. These two de
nominations are the ones that train
their people from childhood to an intel
ligent membership in the church. In
churches where the catechism still holdB
its place a 6ure and steady growth may
be expected from year to year. In
bodies where it has been neglected or
forgotten growth is spasmodic and un
certain. It is a most hopeful sign that
this fact is beginning to be leahzed in
quarters where years ago the catechism
was little thought of.
The Congregatioiialist speaks wisely
when it says, "But no church will grow
by accretions from without which does
not expand by vigorous life from within.
Its first duty is to train its own children
to he intelligent Christians. The nor
mal growth of the church through its

"I am aknife maker and'jvorked for a number of years in the New York Knife

but advised nie to get to New

They finally took me to a med
ical college, and a whole lot of
physicians made what they
called a diagnosis. There were
several students looking on.
One professor had a little ivory
hammer, and with this he
pounded my chest and held his
ear close to listen. After a
while the professor looked at
me solemnly and declared:
'One of your lungs is about
gone and the other is affected.
There may be a slim chance
lor life if you quit working in
that knife factory.' I went back
home, but didn't improve. One day I saw an advertisement of free samples of
Acker's English Remedy for Consumption, being given away by our home drug
gists, Walker & Eaton. I got one of (hese bottles, and it relieved me. Then I
bought more of the regular size, and my improvement was continuous, although
slow. My doctors were astonished and so was I. After dark I hated to spit,
because I was afraid it might be blood, aud I wanted to know for sure. I have
no fear now, for at last I am a solid man again. Although one lung is gone, the
other is as sound as a dollar, aud answers as well as two lungs, so far as I can
see. I want everyone to know the facts and that is why I tell them here,"
