The Dalles Daily Chronicle. WEDNESDAY - - APRIL 10, 1901 J. A. EBERLE. Leadingssw Merchant Tailor, Second Stet, opposite Mays & Crowe. We have an excellent line of Spring Suitings, Pantings, etc., which we nre prepared to make up in the latest styles, and guarantee a perfect fit. HE WHO DEPARTS FKOM PARTY USES. There is sometuing in the assertion that the democrats who voted for John H. Mitchell in the legislature will probably suffer political persecu tion and perhaps never again see the inside of the Salem capital, except ing as spectators, says the East Ore gonian. The man who steps aside from the path of party alignment must needs hear words of censure for his act, however he may have per formed an act of patriotism or that "which makes for the people's good. He must hear political enemies tie nominate him a part traitor, and those political enemies will not fail to dig up the past and publish it to the world as a damning record against him. This is deplorable, for often a patriot must refuse to stand by his party's acts, and must administer a rebuke to those with whom he has kept political company. Frequently, too, as in the case of Mr. Mitchell's candidacj', the party mac must realize that to hold to an empty party name and organization would be to fail to do his duty as a repre sentative of the people. Undoubted ly it was right for the eleven demo crats to vote for Mr. Mitchell, else no senator would have been elected. It was wisest to choose him. It was beat for Oregon. Furthermor , he wa9 eminently fitted for the oflic s. In view of these facts it is to be regretted that almost certain political damnation awaits the democrats who voted for a republican for senator. It were better if men held less tenaciously to the "yellow dog doc trine," which, being interpreted, means "I will vote for any candi date who has my party's endorse ment." An increase of independent voters would make far better politi cal conditions. The act of those eleven democrats tends to strengthen the independent movement. In a letter to the Antelope Repub lican, President E. E. Lytle, of the Columbia Southern railroad, says: "The article in the Oregonian of the 31st ult., in regard to the extension of tbe Columbia Southern railway, was unauthorized; and I have re quested that paper to announce this, but whether it will do it or not I am unable to say." Of course the Ore gonian announced nothing of the kind, because it isn't built that way ; but every man in Oregon who knows the situation, and is possessed of an ounce of sense, knows that an ex tension of that road either to Pnne ville or in the direction of Canyon City, besides that it could only bo built at an enormous cost, would not give tbe Columbia Southern, in ad dition to tbe traffic it now, practical ly, controls, enough business to pay for tbe grease of tbe car wheels. Tbe entire territory through wblcb either extension would run ie essen tially a stock country, and will re main a stock country for generations yet to come. "Iho Henrietta." The dnte for the production of Bron eon Howard's comedy, "The Henrietta," , has been fixed for Friday night, April 2tth. Northnp, Earl Sanders, Claude Frizzell, Waldo flrip ham vof Dufnr) and Mr. 1'evin. John Fox, Jr., in his study of "The Southern Mountaineer" in the April Scribner, relates that a traveling evan-1 gelist, Mr. Barnes, once stopped at a, mountain tavern and told the story of 'the crucifixion. When he was quite) I through an old woman who had listened in absorbing silence asked : "Stranger, you say that that happened a long while ' ago?" "Yes," said Mr. Barnes, "al- j most two thousand years ago." "And , they treated him that way when he'd , comedown for nothiu' on earth but to j ' save 'em?'' "Yea." The old woman was crying Boftly, and Bhe put out her i hand and laid it on his knee. "Well, J stranger," she said, "let's hope that hit ain't so." Yonr mothers and grandmothers never thought of using anything else for indigestion and biliousness. Doctors were scarce and they seldom heard of appendicitis, nervous prostration or heart failure, etc. They used August Flower to clean out the system and stop fermentation of undigested food, regu late the action of the liver, stimulate the nervous nnd organic action of the sys tem, and that is all they took when feel ing dull and bad with headaches and other aches. You only need a few doses of Green's August Flower, in liquid form, to make you satisfied there is nothing serious the matter with you. Get Green's prize almanac.
