CELEBRATION
PLANNED
To Commemorate the Discovery of the
Columbia River by Captain Gray.
Aktoiua, March 20. Tho matter of
celebrating the discovery of the Columbia
river by Captain Gray is now being con
sidered in this city, and there is a strong
sentiment in favor of a big demonstra
tion. The first centennial celebration
was hold in May, 1892, 100 years after
the ship Columbia entered the great
river which bears her name. It was the
first celebration of tho kind ever held
here, and was even more successful than
was hoped for by the mcst sanguine. The
cruisers Baltimore and Charleston were
in the harbor, and thousands of people
flocked to the city from all parts of the
state. So dense was the crowd that it
was well-nigh impossible for one to walk
on tho streets. The celebration lasted
three days, and fully 15,000 strangers
were in town. At that time the ar
rangement committee planned for a
similar celebration every 10 years, and
the matter has now been brought up. It
is thought'steps will be taken soon to
sound sentiment as to the proposed
celebration.
Preparations for the annual regatta
are already under way, and a committee
to have charge of tho carnival will short
ly be appointed by the Push Club, which
annually. takes hold of this matter. It
is the intention to commence work on
the carnival earlier than usual. With
the low rates now prevailing to this city
from Portland, the attendance this year
should be twice as great as ever before.
ltnrlierx at War,
SuMi-TEit, March 20. The barbers have
been having all kinds of trouble here of
of late. At a meeting of tho entire fra
ternity some days ago it was decided to
reduce the price of hair cutting to 25
cents. This reduction did not seem to
meet with favor in the eyes of Barber
Lavin, and he went the rest oue better
by making shaving 20 cents. Then there
was trouble over the Sunday closing law,
but all closed.
Barber Lavin had Barbers Davidson
and Buffum arrested yesterday for shav
ing without a state license. Tho cases
wero called this morning in Judge Felix's
court, and attracted a large crowd. The
sidewalk even lit front of his honor's of
fice was bo crowded that tho city mm.
slial and his deputies were unable to
open a passage way to and from the
postoflice. Lawyer McCulloch prosecuted
the cases and Lawyer Shelton defended.
After listening to tho testimony and the
arguments of the learned attorneys, tho
jury rendered a decision in just four
minutes of not guilty.
Don't Hub It In,

Mysterious Pain Cure, a Scotch remedy,
