SCENE IN
COMMONS
liish Members Dragged Out by the
Police Yesterday They Had Re
fused to Obey the Speaker.
Ni:w Vouk, March 0. Dispatch to the
World from London Bays : There was a
erene of unexampled violence and die
order in the British house of commons
Tuesday night when ten Irish members
who had refused to obey the speaker's
or ler to leave the house, were dragged
out by the police. It wbb the first time
in history that a Vlicuman had been
seen on the floor of the house.
The vote on account of the civil service
for X17.000.000, $83,000,000) had been
closured ufter a single night's discussion
devoted wholly to English education.
No Irihli member had spoken, although
several Irish departments were included
in the vote. There had been an under
standing that if the evening wore given
to English education, other questions
would be discussed at a subsequent
titling. When Mr. Arthur Balfour
moved tlio closure, the Irish members
protested loudly. Hut the chairman of
the committee Mr. Lowtber, a cousin
of Mr. Balfour never refuses him
closure.
John Redmond, Mr. Dillon and older
hands of the Irish party, had lelt the
house, understanding that no further
business would be done, and Borne of the
younger, leBB experienced Irishmen be
came desperately excited over Mr. Bal
four's attempt to overreach them. There
wbb no time for deliberate counsel and
it was decided that they Bhould refuse to
go into the division lobby when called
upon by the chair to do bo.
Speaker Gully wbb called in, and the
nameB of ten Irishmen who diBobeyed
the chairman's order were taken down,
and they were named for suspension.
A terrific tumult arose. Mr. Balfour
looked appalled at the result of his
action, but nothing could Btem the tor
rent of his passion on the Irish benches.
At u signal from the sergeant, the door
of the liouse wae opened and about 20
policemen appeared. It was a epectacle
that struck with horror all who witnessed
it. The temper of the Irishmen became
more dangerous than ever. The speaker
uppealed to them to obey the orders of
the house. They shouted back defiance.
Tiie .ministers and their supporters
looked on shamefaced at the unexampled
tcene being enacted, worse than any
tli lit had ever taken place in the Austrian
Ueichsrath.

Noitni Yakima, Wash., March G. The

The papers in this remarkable case re

Her husband, she says, forbade her as
sociating with former friends and rela

her mother be kept out of the house. He

disposition, and refused her spending
money. The only amount ho permitted

that being her wedding present.
McAllister it known ai a rich nheep
man. In hie defense he swears that he
is Insolvent. He tbluki tre family has
persuaded the girl to leave him for
money. She sayt he often abused her,
und when abe complained o( being tick
he remarked that the should hire an
Indian squaw to carry her around. He
thought she might get iu glass cage and
have candy thro'wn at her pretty face, as
she was toodainty for any other purpose.
He tantalized her with her former
poverty, while he was wealthy, and
thought she had made a mistake in
marrying a husky Scotchman when she
was such a weakling as to want a hired
girl to wash the family linen.

The murder was a peculiar one, and

Liverpool, March 6. On hie anival
here today, on the White Star line
steamer Oceanic, from New York, the
Duke of Manchester, who with bis bride,
was a passenger on board, was eerved
with a writ for an alleged breach of
promise at the instance of Portia Knight,
of London.
Mies Knight is an American, 23 or 24
years of age. She was on the stage in
New York, for a ehoit time, and has
been living privately in London for a
year. She referred a representative of
the Associated Pre9 to her lawyers. The
writ has been out for some time, she
said, and she did not known whether it
would be served in America or England.
Miss Knight was glad to hear that it has
been eerved in Liverpool.
"I regret that this affair has become
public," Bhe said. I thought it would
be done in camera. I do hope it will
not be taken up by the American papers.
I have brought the suit not because I
desired ppblicity, but because I felt in
duty bound to all my friends here in
England. For their sakes as well as my
own, I have every wish that the proceed
ings should be as quiet aa possible. I
only met the Duke of Manchester since
I came to England a year ago. But really,
I must refer you to my solicitors."
When Miss Knight's eolicitora were
called upon they declined to give any
detail" or to do more than to confirm the
report that Mies Knight had commenced
the action.
