There is an intereBting bit of gossip
connected with this case, and if the
rumors In circulation are true, it may
yet attract fur greater attention than it

It is not quite clear for what purpose
the money was transferred, but rumor
has it that the funds were not those of
Editor Gill, but were given Gill by Mr.
Poor man, to lie paid to some members
of the legislature, for what purpose can
only be eurmlfed. Mr. l'oortnan dis
claims any interest in the matter, and
Mr. Gill has not been seen in Salem
since the arrest of Gates was made.
When Gates vas apprehended, he bad
1300 in currency, and express receipts
for $200, evidencing a lemittence of that
aniounY to his sister. Chief of police
Gibson, of this city, tias the money in
his possession, and ie anxious to rind the
rightful owner, who will have to be
found, as Mr. Gill, who swore in the
complaint, charging Gates with the
theft, that he was the owner of the
money, is not here to claim it.
An interesting fact in connection with
the case Is, that two attorneys were em
ployed for the man, and that the one he
retained furnished cash hail for the
prisoner to the tune of $500, taking this
amount from a roll of enrrancy the flight
of which made the police court reporters
LMihp. It is evident that no efforts will
he spared to free the man and hush up
the fctory, but it is promised, by those
on the inside, that sensational develop
ments will result within the next few
days.
Gill's place as clerk on the house ways
and means committee was yesterday de
clared vacant, by u resolution adopted
by the committee, for the express reason,
that he ImB been absent from his duties
since the evenine of February 20th.
