THE DALLES, OR.
SALMAGUNDI.
The little town of Lyons, up on tlie
Eantiaui, boaata of a "joint-smasher."
The report came to Salem that a Mrs.
Wilson, of that place, went into an
illicit saloon, drairged her husband from
n crowd of loungers, and then demol
ished the establishment in "Nation"
Btyle.
Mack Sulbette, a horseman, left his
room in Vereallea, Ky., at mldnignt in
his sleep, walked to his father's home,
five miles south, where his sister Is ill,
sat by his sister's bedside talking with
her half an hour, left the house, walked
back to Versailles ami returned to bed
without awakening.
The only power that can absolve the
United States from the pledge of unre
stricted independence to Cuba is the
sovereign people of Cuba. That it
would he to the best interests of all that
Cuba should come under the sovereignty
of the United States scarcely admits of
question. But the matter is one for the
Cubans to decide. They have our per
mission to throw gratitude and sell in
terest to the winds and take the conse
quences. Saloon men are already beginning to
reap a rich harvest out of the recent
blunder of congress in abolishing the
army canteen, a number of saloons
having been opened near Fort Sam
Houston. The testimony of army offi
cers and army chaplains was out
weighed by the influence of the good,
but. mistaken ladies of tiie W. C. T. U.,
and Uncle Sam was made to do a great
wrong to his soldiers.
The cattlemen of the Northwest have
been complaining for many years about
tbo growth of poisonous weeds upon the
ranges, and last en minor the secretary
of agriculture sent out a couple of
botanists to make an investigation.
They found six plants of a poisonous
nature growing wild in different parts of
the territory, all fatal to cattle. Anti
dotes were diecovered for three of them,
bat the other three thus far have no
cure. The department is now engaged
in a thorough investigation of the sub
ject and will be able to make a detailed
report within a few weeks.

A powerful engine cannot be run witii
a weak boiler, and we can't keep up the
strain of an active life with a weak
stomach ; neither can we stop the human
machine to make repairs. If the stomach
cannot digest enough food to keep the
