The Dalles Daily Chronicle. MONDAY FEB. 4, 1901 Tlio auuual pension bill now be fore congress carries $145,245,230, the largest appropriation on record. The New York Sun, commenting upon it, says that the aggregate pay ment this year exceeds the aggregate payments on the same account (lur ing the flvc years from 1879 to 1883; that it is more than double the ap propriation in 1890 eleven years ago, and the number of pensioners has increased more than 300 per cent in twenty years. We suspect that this is all true, and naiurslly enough. At first the soldiers that came out of war did not think about pensions. 3lost of those soldiers are today sixty years old, or more; a great many of them have been unfortunate, and they have no means. Because of their work, the rest of the people of the United States have a country which is very productive and pros perous. And while no doubt there are pension frauds who ought to be run down, unearthed and exposed, yet every true soldier who fought in the war is entitled to that support for bis few remaining years from the taxation of the country, and if he has an old wife, who has fought life's battle through the years with him, she is entitled to it. If there are any women who married these soldiers to get the pension, if they fail, it is no matter; but for the old veterans, there ought to be no debate what ever. It was they who saved us a nation, and they are entitled to have their steps steadied down ttie final slope of life at the country's expense. in tlie last century our torcign commerce increased twelvefold, and yet our foreign shipping almost dis appeared from the ocean. European subsidies paid to snips drove our unprotected vessels from the sea and now wuen an nonest etrort is made to restote what we have lost and what we ought to have, and can have if wc will, the whole free trade crow are, as usual, up in arms against it. A Linn county repiesentativc has succeeded in having the house act favorably upon a measure to ap. propriate 81000 for the improvement of the soda springs at Sodaville, Linn county. Will the Albany Democrat please to take note of this "graft" and condemn it accordingly ? Or is a "graft" only something in which Linn county is not directly inter ested? The Oregonian is in error when it refers to Mr. Corbett as the "candi date of the majority." He has not received a majority of the votes ot the legislature, nor even a majority of the republican members. He is strictly a minority candidate, and ii might as well be understood, first as last, that he cannot bulldoze the Oregon legislature. Word comes from the Philippines that among imported animals the mule thrives best. The bray of Missouri's indispensable product is heard around tho world from Cape Town to lloilo, and frequently drowns the warring drumbeat ab it circles the globe, proudly remarks tho Globc-Domocrat. The ridicule heaped on the ship subsidy bill has a marked resemblance to the assault on tho,, American tin plate industry a few years ago. It is the same kind of misrepresentation and by the same old crowd. And yet American tin is now an immense and solid interest.
