Four Joints at Anthony Were Demolished
Early This Mornin hy Twelve
Women and Girls With Hatchets
and I'jckaxcs
Kansas City, Mo., Jan. 30. A special
to the Star, from Anthony, Kan., says:
Early this morning, before most citizens
liml reached their places of business,
tmilve women of the Anthony Women's
Christian Tempeiance Union, armed
with hummers, hatchets and pirk-nxes,
raided und completely demolished four
"joints" in Anthony, Husbands of the
women went alone armed to protect their
wivvc. Among the brigade were two or
three school glrlp, under age who did
some uf the moft effective smashing. A
greater part of the havoc was duelled
before the police or mayor were aware of
what wn going on. The aetuul dumitKe
to personal properly,' aside from the
liquor destroyed, is estimated by saloon
keepers as $2000.
For a time the whole tow n was in mi
uproar and it was leureu ttiat personal
violence would result. The first place
attacked wan hit tinted in the rear of a
drug store, which was forcibly entered
from the rear. It contained tome costly
bar fixtures and a valuable cash legister.
Within a few minutes the women had
smashed everything In eight, but in their
hurry to linish this job and gu to other
places they overlooked the bulk of liquor
etored away. Haifa block down the
street the second street the second scene
of joint-smashing was enacted. They
found this saloon locked, but axes were
applied and the whole front was smashed
in. Here their work was more complete.
itie building, a great plute glass mirror
and everything In sight was reduced to
the maximum of the Mrs. Nation idea.
The proprietor was smashed over the
bead with a beer bottle and hiH blood
mixed with tho flow of Honors over t tie
lloor. The jointkeeper was struck by
tlie husband of one of the women.
In quick succession two other places a
short distance down the street were sub
jected to similar treatment, the fixtures
smashed and all the liquor turned into
tlie gutter.
Today's raid was led by a Mrs. Sheriff,

oi UanviUH, who came to Anthony last
night, organized the local temperance
women and planned the crusade. Mrs
Sheriff has previously destroyed a joint
in Danville, and is credited with having
given Mrs. Nation the first idea for a
wrecking crusade. The saloon 'keepers
of Anthony each have a wareroom aside
from their saloon where stock of liquor
is kept. The women did not know this
and a considerable amount of the pro
hibited liquid is yet ujmolested.
After the work of demolition was com
pleted the crusaders held a prayer meet
ing on the sidewalk and "Nearer My
God to Thee" was song with fervor and
great unction.

Ni:w York, Jan. 30 A special to the
Herald from Ottawa, Ontario, says: The
services to be held in Ithu Church of
England cathedral Saturday in memory
of Qneen Victoria are not to be dignified
by state recognition. This fact will not
detract from the impresslveness of the
service, the imposing character of the
civil and military pageant, or the sin
cerity of popular mourning, but that
on the eve of such an occasion the gov
ernment shall decide to withdraw official
recognition of ceremonies intended to
mark the nation's grief for the dead
queen is nevertheless regarded as sur
prising. The facts of the difference betwe"n the
governor-general and his advisers, which
has led to this result, cannot be learned
from oflicial sources, but the trouble ap
pears to have been caused by a deter
mination on the part of the government
not to recognize the cathedral services
officially lest it be construed as acknowl
edging a "state" church in Canada.

Mamila, Jan. 30. Dr. Kruger, the
German consul-general here, has cabled
to the Berlin government asking that
the Berlin ambassador at Washington be
instructed to diplomatically urge the
passage of the Spooner bill. Similar
action will probably be taken by the
British consul.
Two mining corporations organized in
Germany are anxious to begin operations
in the Philippines, but cannot do so
until the status of mining claims is
established by a permanent government.
Buencamlno and some of the other
Filipino leaders in Manila have about
decided to become Protestants, and are
considering the organization of an Evan
gelical church. In an interview today
Bneneumino said that he had learned

Philippines. Buencamino added that
the Filipinos could not submit to that,
and the effect would be that they will
shortly leave the Catholic church in
treat numbers. No public meeting has
been held, but the leaders of the move
ment will meet privately tonight to dis
cuss the question that the Rev. James
B. Rogers, a missionary of the Presby
terian board, who advises the establish
ment of an Evangelical church.
The principals of the project are Buen
camino, Dr. Rosano, Tavare aud Flores.
All of these men are members of the
executive committee of the federal party.
But Chief Justice Arello and General
Torres, the returning members of that
committee, adhere strictly to the Catholic
church and have declared the movement
toward Protestantism does not emanate
from the party organization.

New York, Jan. 29. A special to the
Worjd from Washington eays: President
McKinley said to several callers that the
only question remaining undecided was
whether he would issue the call for an
extra seesion of congress before or after
his second term beging on March 4.
The action of the United States eup
reme court in announcing that It will
take a receBS until February 11, when it
will meet, hand down decisions and ad
journ for anottier two weeks, was con
strued to indicate an extra session of
congreES. The court usually takes this
two weeks for recess in February. It is
surmised that the long recess now is for
the purpose of gfvlng the justices a
chance to devote their time to the study
of Porto Rico and Philippine cases that
they may render the decisions by March
4.
Mr. McKinley said to one of his friends
that an extra seseion would be called for
Philippines legislation, no matter what
the decision of the supreme court might
be.

"Four bottles of Electric Bitters has
cured Mrs. Brewer of scrofula, which had
caused her great suffering tor years.
Terrible sores would break out on her
bead and face, aud the best doctors
could give no help; but her cure is com

shows what thousands have proved,
that Electric Bitters is the best blood

ulcers, boils and running sores. It
stimulates liver, kidneys and bowels,
expels poisons, helps digestion and

Persons who suffer from indigestion
can not expect to live long, because they
cannot eat the food required to nourish
the body aud the products of the undi
gested foods they do eat poison the
blood. It is important to cure indiges

method of doing this is to use the prepa
